Fulton -> Some first PBEM thoughts (9/25/2008 11:18:40 PM)

First of all I want to thank all the posters here. I've been studying off and on over the last year on this "game" and decided it was worth the commitment of PBEM.

I also wanted to thank the original post http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1563206
"for newbies who fear playing WITP"

It finally gave me the courage to just admit I may NEVER know everything but that doesn't stop ya from playing! After admitting that and being ok with it I realized playing mindgames and tactically and strategically confusing the computer cannot keep my interest up the way it does against another human. Especially with this many units.

So I registered to these fine forums that I've been lurking on for over a year and asked for an opponent. I got two. [X(]

Two days and four turns (and one crash after 2 hours no save) later my eyes see nothing but maps, hexes, bases, TF's and most importantly, potential.

This game is so big, so detailed and relatively accurate that the opportunity to play with another from the comfort of my couch is truly a gift.

The most important difference between AI and human play for me is ownership of units. Now all of a sudden all of these ships, squadrons, even pt boats are mine. All of a sudden I care about them all. Reading the "Small Ship big War" AAR really opened up my imagination level as well and I have picked a couple ships and subs that I will follow through the war.

I don't recommend starting two games in the middle of a workweek but I can say I am truly excited to see how these games play out long term.

Now if I couldn't only figure out a way to play at work. -- Other than reading posts, staring at maps and making a sig of course...

Anyone use a wall-map??

Thanks again to all the contributors here for making this forum and community so helpful. [&o]

Guess I got bitten by the bug bad! [8D]

There goes another life down the tubes.

I'm lucky that my wife only makes daily comments about my time at the computer and "wasting" time playing games, she never tries to stop me though.

Or maybe she's plotting against you behind your back... Bet you never thought of that, eh?[:D]

Good luck, and even more important, have fun!

WitP does not at first glance look like much of a candidate for a role-playing game but I think for a lot of players, myself included, the game is immersive enough to become more than chess on a vast scale. At the very least it's hard to avoid the ghosts of history when dealing with storied names like Enterprise. Just remember to take a step back when things go badly and remember that it is, after all, just ones and zeros.

While its true that it is all just ones and zeros, I think we do all have our favorite ship/squadron that we get somewhat attached to while we play. PBEM is a very long committment, it is hard not to have a favorite ship over that length of time. I do have a favorite, for me it is DD Kasumi, much like you have DD Hibiki....still I care about every ship, plane and LCU under my command and I hate to lose any of them.

Zebedee -> RE: Some first PBEM thoughts (9/26/2008 6:41:44 AM)

Shark7 has been kind enough to agree to take me through my first PBEM of WitP. Personally, I'm attached to two ships - the Boise and the Kuma. Hopefully, one of them at least will survive the war, and my money is currently on the Boise [:D]

FeurerKrieg -> RE: Some first PBEM thoughts (9/26/2008 4:30:49 PM)

In my game with OSO, Nagato is probably the main ship I keep tabs on because of its role in some surface combats near Kendari early in the war. Out of ammo and near point blank range with Boise and Houston and other CLs, it took a beating but survived two or three days of fighting (although two of my CA's went down).

As far as LCUs, I watch the SS Detachment pretty close as it was the key unit that took all the outer perimeter bases that I expected resistance at. To a lesser degree, I've formed a bond with a group of divisions/armor/engineers that are under the Southern Area Army. As a group they took Singapore, then Manila, then New Zealand and are now on another offensive....

Fulton -> RE: Some first PBEM thoughts (9/28/2008 8:09:24 AM)

I was thinking someting more along the lines of a historical type..

http://www.mapsales.com/products/geonova/world-war-two-pacific-wall-map.htm

Possibly something without the lines, but laminated to allow erasable marking.
