zuikaku -> AI and downgrading air groups (9/27/2008 1:59:10 PM)

Another question regarding AI.
In my campaigns versus AI there were situations where AI aircraft pool was drained
of certain type of aircraft. In one campaign, he had run short of Hurricane II and Spit Vsin India.
And instead of downgrading some of Hurr sqouadrons back to the older types, it insisted to keep them
even if thay had one or none Hurrs per squadron. In another campaign, Japanese AI refused to downgrade Tojo and Tony
squadrons to Oscars- although it had hundreds of them in the pool. Instead it insisted to fight with depleted sqouadrons
which coul'd achieve nothin. I really think that 27 oscars or Mohawks are far better than 1 or 2 Hurrs or Tojos.
Is this issue being adrressed in AE? Or is AI stuck being able only to upgrade sqouadrons to newer types of aircraft.
Would be far better if some "if number of type B lesser than X, than "downgrade" sqouadron to type A if available in number Y" . Ofcourse, they'll upgrade again to better type when their numbers become sufficient.

I havent gotten past Dec 11 on a test yet before having to restart because of a new update, so frankly I cant answer this. Maybe one of the coders can.

Ok, thanks anyway for such a fast answer [&o]

I'm not sure the AI in WITP has ever done down grades!  Two issues here, what should the AI do with depleted air groups and should new/reformed air groups downgrade aircraft types?

zuikaku -> RE: AI and downgrading air groups (9/27/2008 8:27:40 PM)

No, never saw it downgrading. And never rotated depleted airgroups in rear areas to rebuild them.
It rather kept unit in the frontline services with only aircraft or two. And there were always hundreds of older aircraft types which it could use in emergency...

pad152 -> RE: AI and downgrading air groups (9/28/2008 7:44:19 PM)

So how will AE handle depleted air groups with only 1 or 2 planes left and nothing left in the pool?

Will it disband the airgroup have it reform in 90 days?

Re-equip it with older aircraft (down grade)?

After some time the playtesting lasts now , have some maybe noticed how the AE AI handles this issue? Maybe in AI vs. AI games?

Andy Mac -> RE: AI and downgrading air groups (3/1/2009 6:28:45 PM)

Ummmm errrrr yess the AI won't have that problem...

Getting the AI to THINK like a player and rotate groups and downgrade and upgrade aircraft proved impossible but fear not there was another solution.......

*cough* The AI gets certain “advantages” in aircraft production to offset some of these tendencies

Andy Mac -> RE: AI and downgrading air groups (3/1/2009 6:30:07 PM)

That line after the cough was supposed to be much smaller....

CV Zuikaku -> RE: AI and downgrading air groups (3/1/2009 6:39:01 PM)

Good thing that AI won't run be left fighting with a few aircrafts...
THX for the answer!
P.S. The line is small enough [:D]

rockmedic109 -> RE: AI and downgrading air groups (3/1/2009 10:04:51 PM)

If that line were much smaller, my aging eyes would have problems seeing it!

I always monkeyed a little with the editor to give the Japanese {I quake in my boots when I think about playing the Japanese production} a little extra.  It looks like you've taken care of that already.  Now, all I will have to do will be to add a few pilots {James Kirk to the Enterprise air group, my father-in-law, my parent's neighbor who flew in China}.

Andy Mac -> RE: AI and downgrading air groups (3/1/2009 11:24:11 PM)

The issue is the more new features we add for players the more the AI creaks - its a fact that the AI in stock struggled with some things and some things we all hated from stock were requirements for the AI e.g. Research Factories I am pretty certain they were put in as a fix for the AI's production and the research element added as an afterthought - I havent spoken to a developer from the original game but thats my stong feeling on it.

So many other things like the extra japanese LCU's, like the arrival of Indian forces when they deployed to Assam rather than to India, like no PDU in the original release, like no stacking limits on islands, like respawing Carriers the list is truly endless

The more complexity the harder it is for the AI.

The more time I spend trying to get the AI to do what I want with appropriate force when I want it the more I realise what an outstanding job The original WITP designers did there is a very good reason 2by3 re so successfull they know what is doable and they do it - it was a fantastic piece of work that I for one never really appreciated until I was allowed inside to try and replicate it.

Every time you break one of those AI solutions from the original game you need to code how you are going to replicate its effect to keep the AI functional.

So the AI does cheat a little in aircraft production especially as the Japanese - there is still a kernel of truth that the AI is linked to actual on map production so you can shut it down by economic warfare but lets just say the relationship is not add one aircraft for every one produced where the AI is concerned and at higher difficulty levels well its most certainly not 1:1 (the AI also gets a little help with upgrades !!!)

Andy
