JudgeDredd -> Defo somrthing wrong with your forums Matrix (9/30/2008 7:11:25 PM)

Whenever I make a long post, it times out when I click the Submit button....and it only happens when I'm making a long post...it NEVER happens with a short post.

Widell -> RE: Defo somrthing wrong with your forums Matrix (9/30/2008 7:29:25 PM)

I have experienced this as well on a couple of occasions. My "hotfix" is to make sure I copy the text before hitting submit....

At first you'd think a feature called "forum timeout" is causing this, but there's actually a nifty piece of code in the forum software which evaluates the inherent value of your post. If this is deemed too *high*, it is discarded [:D]

Well, if it's any consolation to you : *all* my posts get through [:D]

I always draft posts in a Word doc and, check the spelling and then use copy and paste

All kidding aside : I've never had a timeout using FireFox, but I do occasionally get them using IE.

What I always do is a select all text and hit <ctrl> <c> before clicking the <ok> button.

If all goes well, no problem, if I get a time-out I can simply repaste my message.

Greetz,

And how f***** sad it is that we all do stuff like that : we've grown so accustomed (or for some users, that's all they know, shoddy software ;)) to bad software, annoying glitches being the norm that we find workarounds normal, rather than helping the devs fixing it...
You'd think that something as ubiquitous as forum software would not have such a show stopper bug (I slightly exaggerate, hehe), or that the critical mass of copy pasters will signal something to the maintainers of quick edit/rich edit text boxes : fix the software or just let us paste formatted stuff from Word or whatever our favorite editor is if we have to use outside software to use the forum....

Kinda electing a jerk to parliament to represent you if you ask me ;)
e.g Ineffectual intermediaries et al.

If you think this is bad, I kindly invite you to visit the Wargamer forums ... there's only 1 word for the new forum software they've been using for the past couple of months and it starts with cr and rhymes with lap.

I've let the admins there know what the problems are, in various browsers, but they're just as much a victim as the rest of us.

Oh, I didn't mean Matrix was particularly bad in that regard, actually quite the contrary in my experience with it :)
It was a liberatory, and generalized rant.
'Scuse me, I will probably do it again.

hermanhum -> Problem (10/1/2008 10:20:16 PM)

OMG.  I just cringe when I visit WG fora... [X(]

Bodhi -> RE: Problem (10/1/2008 10:38:02 PM)

Isn't the Wargamer forum software just a newer, and worse, verson of the software used here: ASPPlayground.NET Forum Commercial Version 3.0 as oppposed to ASPPlayground.NET Advanced Edition 2.4.5 ANSI? At least we get the "Advanced" version here. [;)]

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problem (10/1/2008 10:45:56 PM)

I brought this to our admin's attention and he's guessing that some of you are not checking the box to stay logged in. That means you login each time you visit the forum and it has you in a session. The session by default lasts for 20 minutes without activity, so if you go 20 minutes between interactions with the forum (i.e. clicking a button or a link) it logs you out or times out. He's going to up that to 30 minutes and see if that helps.

We're also going to reindex the forum database to see if that speeds things up.

By the way, we have the option of upgrading to the version of forum software being run at the Wargamer. I'd be interested to hear your arguments against it as I haven't been active in the Wargamer forums lately.

Dear God, say it isn't so! For the sake of all that is Holy, don't do it.....

"Don't do it" - is the most sound piece of advice in this case.

Just a couple of complaints :

In IE6 - the text box *continuously* refreshes and if you keep your browser window small it'll scroll to the top lines automatically no matter where you're typing. I've resorted to typing everything in Word and then doing a copy & paste.

In FireFox 7 it's even worse : there it won't allow me to snip text - in other words : select text, hit delete - nothing - you can add text, you just can't delete text written by others to shorten the post.

Greetz,

Eddy Sterckx

Marc von Martial -> RE: Problem (10/2/2008 11:48:18 AM)

FWIW, I have no problems with the forums at The Wargamer at all. That is with Firefox 3 on MacOS 10.5.5.. Safari gives me problems.

The only problem that I have is the color sceme [:D], it really prevents me form visiting the forums more regularly.

junk2drive -> RE: Problem (10/2/2008 1:40:09 PM)

Wargamer's new forums are ugly. I have XP with IE7 and when I enter a thread I cannot use my scrollwheel unless I click somewhere on the screen. It works when scrolling through the forum main page or subforums.
