pjwheeling -> Richmond Confederate Newspaper (10/2/2008 3:38:21 AM)

I did some edits on my 1st issue and I am starting this new thread on this ARR thread. This will be somewhat of a different AAR; one that does not resemble FOF much. Instead, it will be a newpaper from Richmond, Va. beginning in April 1861. I am playing the Confederates, beginning with the November scenario. So, from April through October the reports will not be taken from FOF results, but will be taken from actual newspaper articles from that day, plus other sources. I am citing sources whenever possible. Beginning in June you will read some ahistorical stuff that will flow from strategies that I will be using once I begin to play FOF. Beginning in November I will add some stats similar to what Grey Hunter did with "News From the Front", but it will be on an additional attachment. So this will have sort of a "Guns of the South" flavor meaning that it will start out historical and move to the ahistorical. The ahistorical parts obviously come from the results from my FOF game. Often you will see newspaper columns from Richmond, Va. Richmond, you might say, was the center of the world for about 4 years. There was excitement, patriotism, fear, dread, disease, death, and all in large measure. At least in the Eastern theater, it was the center of the war. I hope you enjoy it.

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (10/2/2008 3:59:16 AM)

Ok. Here is the 2nd issue, May 14,1861.
Note the enthusiastic article about the possibility of the Confederate capital coming to Richmond. It's all excitement now, but in less than four years it will be up in smoke.
In the 1st issue I included an article about Robert E. Lee's resignation and accepting the leadership of the Va. forces. Notice the next big resignation. Jeb Stuart.

Nice job.

Thanks. I will try to get another one out in the next day or so.
It's a lot of work. [:)]

Here is issue 3. There are two nice little articles taken from Richmond newspapers concerning new recruits at camp being drilled by VMI cadets. The article about the arrival of President Davis is excellent as well.

Issue No.4

This one is almost entirely excertps from Jefferson Davis' speech to the Provisional Confederate Congress, but in my opinion is an excellent read because it gives you an idea of where the Confederacy was really coming from. Enjoy.

Issue 5.

As you can see, the Richmond Confederate is still posting many actual newspaper articles.
But, history is beginning to change.

Good to see it back. I was wondering if you had stopped.

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (11/26/2008 9:46:49 PM)

Gil, thanks for the reply. It's good to know that some are still reading.
It's been a busy month so I took a break for awhile.
I plan to get another one out sometime over the Thanksgiving Holiday, Lord willing.

Patrick

Gil R. -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (11/26/2008 10:31:13 PM)

Great. By the way, the new patch isn't too far away, so if you haven't started playing the game itself yet you might want to wait for it. Has new features, rules, etc.

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (11/27/2008 3:33:10 AM)

Great ! Looking forward to the new patch. I still have to report the news up till November when the scenario I will be using begins. It will be quite some time.

Patrick

HiHi

Another Goodun PJ, Cheers.

Hope you don't mind but I have taken the liberty of posting the link to your AAR on 'the Blitz' forum as I think it may be of interest to folk over there as well, again thanks for taking the time & effort it's a fascinating read.

All the Best
Peter

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (1/3/2009 11:49:49 PM)

No. I don't mind at all. I appreciate it.
It's a lot of research and work, but rewarding.
I'm glad there are still people reading it.

Patrick

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (1/25/2009 8:58:56 PM)

Issue #9 - The speech is a great article taken from DeBow's review in 1852.

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (1/30/2009 4:01:38 AM)

By the way, I should have mentioned that much of the information I used to write President Davis' speech came from an actual speech that he made to Congress on the state of the Confederacy on November 18th, 1861. I'm a couple of months ahead of schedule with that, but the timing fit in perfect with what I am trying to do and, besides, history will begin to come from Forge of Freedom beginning in November.

Patrick

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (1/31/2009 12:51:29 AM)

I was delighted to discover that the iron spoken of in the Richmond Enquirer came from the Cloverdale Mine in Botetourt County. I grew up less than five miles from the area.

Issue 12, Mid-October 1861. I are getting close to the date where Forge of Freedom will decide history.

This is the last issue before Forge of Freedom kicks in.
I hope you have enjoyed the actual news reports from 1861 Richmond.
I will try to include some in my future issues if practical.

Yes I do! Reading the Jeff Davis Adress one can clearly see the war of the 1860s is not about a nation beeing divided, its about a nation of its own fighting to break free.

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (2/4/2009 4:17:16 AM)

I should have a new issue from The Richmond Confederate coming in about two more days. I played my 1st two weeks and had alot of action. Three battles right off the bat. Beginning with the next issue, The Richmond Confederate will be issued on a weekly basis instead of bi-weekly for the remainder of the War.[:)]

You capture the flavour of the era quite well I think.  Looking forward to future editions.

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (2/6/2009 4:57:43 AM)

This is the 1st of two issues with results from early November, 1861.
The difficulty setting is First Sergeant. To account for the Confederate government's decision to pursue a strategy of strengthening industrialization, (discussion began soon after the Battle of Manassas, see Issue #8) I have added 5% to the Confederate currency and 10% to iron manufacturing to begin the game. Perhaps the iron sounds like alot, but it really isn't when you consider how low it is to begin with. The Union is still higher in every resource except horses, and still much higher in currency. I discovered Forge of Freedom late in the game, summer of 2008, and have played through it only once, so I am still a bit of a novice. There will be no predetermined results, so I may get whooped. My first battle, as you can see, went well. However, the 2nd and 3rd which will be in the next issue were not quite so successful.

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (2/8/2009 2:48:11 AM)

You might notice that I use a few of terje439's tips in "So you want to bring glory to the South?" [:'(] I included some statistics in this issue. I will do that at the end of each turn, which amounts to every other issue.

Issue #16. No Union offenses. Must be Winter setting in.
I included more Richmond newspaper articles and a mini-bio of the Confederate Chaplain.

pjwheeling -> RE: Richmond Confederate Newspaper (2/13/2009 2:53:24 AM)

Issue #17. The story about the fire made me chuckle. Those Yankee prisoners are quite mischevious. Maybe I shouldn't try to capture any more Yankee regiments. I'm not sure if the rabble can be kept under control. LOL
