mikul82 -> RE: Im doing my head in waiting for WaR!! (10/23/2008 2:32:54 PM)

Did they fix the laser-guided mortars and artillery?  I have to admit I was really disappointed to see this one being re-made instead of the classic Close Combat: A Bridge to Far.  I remember buying this game and thinking it was the absolute worst of the CC series and the most arcadish by far.

I have enough faith in MatrixGames though that I'm sure I'll buy it shortly after its release. [;)]  Surely it'll be good this time around.

sol_invictus -> RE: Im doing my head in waiting for WaR!! (10/23/2008 3:21:19 PM)

I will buy this for the sake of nostalgia if nothing else. It will really take me back to the days of my carefree youth. I owned the original but can't remember much about it. I have distinct memories of A Bridge Too Far though and also would have preferred that Matrix had released a version of that instead. Maybe for the next release.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Im doing my head in waiting for WaR!! (10/23/2008 5:01:31 PM)

Didn't get past CC3...totally loved the first one (because it was different) and the 2nd one (because it was fantastic)...3rd one I didn't get on with. Worse, Cross of Iron I bought for the nostalgia (and promises that it was better) and whilst it had been improved in many ways, I still found it extremely annoying to have whole squads of soldiers wiped out by SS style artillery and tanks. Basically I found the basic soldier pretty useless and vulnerable and whilst that is the case in real life, the options in place in the game were not enough to keep your squads alive (smoke seemed utterly useless and not nearly enough to cover you...AND always in the wrong damn place!).

I was disapponted with CoI and for that reason I won't be buyign WaR...but you boys enjoy [;)]

Agreed that there are some "idiosyncrasies" with the AI and the arty/mortars, but for me it's not a deal breaker. The only thing about the AI that really bothers me is that the enemy AI seems unable to use combined arms tactics. It always seems to send it's tanks out unprotected by infantry.

At any rate, I'm having lots of fun in COI as the Russians, and I've got my debit card ready & waiting for the release of WaR.

I certainly hope that the remake of "CC:A Bridge too Far" is next on their agenda.

I think you will be screaming at your monitor more now, because they never seem to hit anything...at least mine don't. My mortar crews must have been dipping into the schnapps before battle

Good to hear it has gone gold. This one, WiTP AE and Bombing the Reich are on my list.

The only other time I've ever heard a similar expression was in the lyrics to a Beach Boys song.

Prince of Eckmühl -> RE: Im doing my head in waiting for WaR!! (10/24/2008 12:37:03 AM)

I rate the games in this order:

CC2
CC3
CC5
CC4
CC1

CC4 was a horrible disappointment. Parts of it just didn't work. I had a lot of problems getting vehicles to do anything sensible and there were some LOS issues. And when you get right down to it, fighting one's way through the woods just isn't that much fun.

In order of how much fun I had playing them I rank the CC line in this order:

AI has always been an issue IMO but I was absolutely thrilled when Atomic Games came out with its grand strategy version of the game.

CC5
CC4
CC2
CCMT
CC3

Never played CC1 so I can't say anything about it.

Hah, I left one out! I actually own CCMT, but haven't played it very much. IMHO, the game has an immense amount of promise because of its multiplayer features. However, I found the zoom-in/zoom-out functions to be so limited as to sort of kill the deal when playing the game solo. I simply had no idea as to what was going on in the MANY precincts of the map that I couldn't observe. In a nutshell, CCMT struck me as somewhat underdeveloped, particularly when compared to CC2. Were I have to included it on the list, it'd likely be behind CC3 or CC5.

Since this exchange is taking place in General Discussion, rather than one of the dedicated CC forums, I'd like to quickly address a concern regarding the future of the series. In a nutshell, I'd like to see a new game emerge from the developers, rather than a super-patch to the retail or contract versions like the upgrades that have been published by Matrix Games. Graphics technology has progressed a lot over the last decade, and a wargame played at this scale would benefit IMMENSELY from a fully-zoomable map, one that takes advantage of a mouse-wheel technology.

PLEASE, GIVE US A NEW GAME!

I wonder who actually owns the source code to the CC series? Me thinks to "Give us a new game" would require a rebuild from scratch, as opposed to just modifying/adding to the current engine. t'would probably take years. Personally, I'd be perfectly happy with an update to CC2.

Heh. Fully zoomable map would be nice, as long as it wouldn't increase the system requirements and would look as good as standard CC maps.
Personally, I missed mostly tools like a colour-coded height map and a line of sight tool. That and spotted sources of fire being marked on map. Zoomed out map is unusable mainly due to lack of these.

ANZAC_Tack -> RE: Im doing my head in waiting for WaR!! (10/24/2008 7:51:45 PM)

ccIII had zoom in and out feature, Dropped in CCIV and then after.

cc1 has a mini zoom 'camera' on bottom right, ccII also i think.

it should be looked at again, missed for fine movements.

Probably would, but if they start on it five years from now, it'll be years from then, rather than years from now. [;)]

I'd be happy, but the interface still needs some work, and more, IMO, than just bringing it up to CC3 standards. I'm not suggesting CMSF-style graphics, btw. I like playing this scale of game on an overhead map, rather than a 3D environment. It's a personal preference. Still, CC-style games would benefit greatly from a fully-graded zoom using the mouse-wheel. If a new game has to be engineered to make that possible, I say go for it. Absent the effort, what are the developers gonna do when they've rehashed all six CC titles?

Perturabo -> RE: Im doing my head in waiting for WaR!! (10/24/2008 10:29:04 PM)

Frankly, I can't imagine fully-graded zoom working with CC-style maps, whose whole aesthetic appeal is based on them being high quality bitmaps.

BTW:
Armored Brigade has a fully-graded zoom function[:D].

SlickWilhelm -> RE: Im doing my head in waiting for WaR!! (10/25/2008 3:52:13 PM)

The best use of fully-graded zoom that I've ever seen in any game is in "Conquest of the Aegean". That is simply outstanding. Dunno if anything like that would be possible with something as detailed as the CC maps, but wouldn't that be wonderful!

Those "high-quality" CC2 bitmaps that you allude to look terrible on a 24" monitor. The pixilation is so bad, that it hurts my eyes. And the game was done in 16-bit color. Sure it's fine for a 1997-era game, and the campaign(s) are freaking awesome. But the SERIES needs more than just new art. It needs some serious work done to the interface, as well.

Perturabo -> RE: Im doing my head in waiting for WaR!! (10/25/2008 5:28:57 PM)

I'm not talking about CC2 bitmaps and CC2 resolution. CC1-3 bitmaps were pretty horrible. True about colours, though.
