corbulo -> quiz to pass time (4/17/2002 9:27:27 PM)

1- what was most produced aircraft of WW2?
2- japanese name for allied codename "frank"?
3- what japanese battleship sunk at 2nd (naval) battle of guadalcanal?
4- american commander at 2nd (naval) battle of guadalcanal? where was he eventually killed?
5- what was ijn successor plane to a6m?
6- IJAF successor to ki-43?

Just some questions to pass the time until "it" happens!

corbulo -> correction (4/18/2002 12:29:51 AM)

correction to question 4:

who was american commander at battle of Cape Esperance who was later killed at 2nd naval battle of guadalcanal?

byron13 -> (4/18/2002 12:30:38 AM)

Without having any reference material at hand, I'm only going to make a WAG at number one: the C-47?

As for number two, I'll guess Frankmaru, Frank-san, or Most Honorable Frank. And what kind of a name is "Hamp" anyway? "Hi, my name is Hamp?"

mdiehl -> (4/18/2002 1:10:29 AM)

I'll venture into the WAG land

1. The B24, unless you mean "most produced of a WW2 type" in which case it might be the F4U (which ran into the 1950s).

2. Thunderbolt?

3. Ainsworth?

4. A6M/5? Seriously, the IJN did not field a competant sucessor.

5. Ki-61?

1. Most produced aircraft of all time, IL-2 Sturmovik (over 36,000)
2. Hayate Ki-84
3. KIRISHIMA
4. Callaghan and Scott
5. A7M Reppu
6. Ki-61 Hein

ratster -> (4/18/2002 1:52:49 AM)

For number one I would guess the Me(Bf) 109, I as I recall they built something like 35,000 of these (all variants). Don't have the reference books anymore though.

Ron Saueracker -> (4/18/2002 4:08:21 AM)

1) don't know, but ME 109 sounds about right.
2) KI-84
3)KIRISHIMA
4)Norman Scott...by 8" shells from USS San Francisco, his old flagship at Cape Esperance
5)an improved variant with more HP, don't no if new name was used
6)KI-44 TOJO

ratster -> (4/18/2002 6:02:45 AM)

LOL! Didn't see your post when I posted, Mogami. I always forget about those Russians, they did build lots of everything.

Ron Saueracker -> Darn you, Mogami! (4/18/2002 6:37:29 AM)

Didn't see your post either.:)

corbulo -> (4/18/2002 9:35:07 PM)

Here is what I came up with (as others said above). Although I need to go back and read about Callaghan and IL-2 Sturmovik.

1- B-24 (till 1945), if after 1945 and ww2 plane then Corsair(as mdiehl said)
2- Hayate (or Hien) ki-84 (trans- hurricane (or flying swallow))
3- Kirishima
4- Norman Scott (i need to check about Callaghan as well)
5-the answer is debatable (J2M RAIDEN)
6-the answer is debatable(KI-44 hayabusa(peregrine falcon),
codename TOJO.

References: Fighting Aircraft of World War II by Bill Gunston (answers to 1, 5 and 6, but as others have said, no replacement was produced in sufficient numbers)
Fire in the Sky by Eric Bergerund
The Pacific War by John Costello

its been fun!

mogami -> opps (4/18/2002 9:41:39 PM)

Callaghan was also killed at this battle,
Was the J2M a carrier plane?
Tojo yes I reversed them the Tony was a bomber interceptor.

No, it was not(see www.combinedfleet.com).
So I guess it did not fulfill functions of the a6m.

Sir George Head -> (4/18/2002 11:17:25 PM)

I think Mogami is right with point one. It was the Il2... its subvariant il10 was also in production after WW2

corbulo -> corrigenda (4/19/2002 4:23:06 PM)

Several people brought up other answers that i researched last night. Here are the corrections:

1- Il-2 Sturmovik
2- Delete Hien (this was Ki-61) Swallow, and not a code name for ki-84
4- the question is wrong. Question should have been
"who commanded at cape esperance october 11th battle who has later killed at battle of friday the 13th of november? "
norman scott commanded the naval engagement "battle of cape esperance" he had 4 cruisers and 5 destroyers. (I see that Ron Saueracker got it 100% correct!)

I used 2 additional reference books:
Aircraft of WW2 by Chris Chant
Guadalcanal by Richard Frank (this book is impressive in its detail)
