I've noticed the units ( usually ) retreat towards their own end of the battlefield, even if they were shot from the same direction. Wouldn't it be more logical to retreat to opposite direction form the firing enemy? This came to my mind when I used my Special OPS squad and attacked an enemy squad from behind and they got suppressed, throw smoke and pulled back - right towards the men that had just shot them. Doesn't look very realistic to me. Has anyone else similar thougts?

I agree that it's not very realistic if they know where the enemy is (which they clearly did in this case). The same problem can be seen in East Front II and the rest of the Campaign series. I wonder if it would be possible to add a routine to retreat away from the firing unit and toward cover (in a general, non-boneheaded way), rather than toward the own map edge. I lean toward the opinion that seeking cover should always be first priority, then move toward own edge. This would probably be a hefty chunk of code though, and could produce some strange results in unexpected situations (which will always happen), so I'm not sure how feasible it would be.

In most cases, this setup works well. In other cases, such as the one you mention, it does not. I simply take it as panic and the troops are running in the direction that will take them to ultimate safety. I know, its a rationalization, but it makes it a little more palatable to me. It would be a good routine, but, like you, Fredrik, it might not be possible at this point. Kind of like the tanks in reverse feature some have asked for. Hi watch out sometimes units retreat right ontop of the unit that shot them!! The Finns often do this and then hit you with satchel charges!!!! ------------------ I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a differant direction!

Sometimes it is best to charge the unit that is attacking you. Ambushes are a good example of this: If the ambushers are within grenade range you are supposed to charge right at them, guns blazing. Once you pass through their lines your squad should sweep down their lines, thus flanking the rest of the ambushing troopers. If the ambushers are outside of grenade range, you should hunker down and send as many rounds towards them as possible. Hopefully, they will withdraw. If not, the rest of the squads in your company will hopefully move around and flank the ambushers. BA Evans
