Scott Kevill -> GameRanger: a better place to play Cross of Iron online (11/14/2008 6:02:27 AM)

Hi all, just thought I'd let you know about a new multiplayer network I've created for playing the Close Combat series online called GameRanger. The actual list is:
- Close Combat I
- Close Combat I Demo
- Close Combat II: A Bridge Too Far
- Close Combat II: A Bridge Too Far Demo
- Close Combat III: The Russian Front
- Close Combat III: The Russian Front Demo
- Close Combat IV: Battle of the Bulge
- Close Combat IV: Battle of the Bulge Demo
- Close Combat V: Invasion Normandy
- Close Combat V: Invasion Normandy Demo
- Close Combat: Cross of Iron
- Close Combat: Modern Tactics

Basically, GameRanger makes it quick and easy to play your friends online.

It has full lobby support for over 500 different games and demos (including the Close Combat series, of course), without the hassles and headaches that usually happen with network connections (eg. routers & firewalls).

I'm really excited to be releasing it, and hope it helps boost the CC community by allowing people to play that were unable to until now due to problems with opening ports, etc. The more barriers that can be removed, the more likely the community will stay strong, as new users won't be put off. You should find this far simpler than the other methods you have had to use.

You can download it at www.GameRanger.com

There are no active forums...

Can we be sure it's not a scam?

It involves downloading a program to your machine and installing...  is this safe?

The forums use the app for their login process.

GameRanger has been around since 1999, but only on the Mac platform (in fact, Close Combat 1 on the Mac was one of its first supported games), it wasn't until yesterday that a PC version was announced and released. See here: http://www.apple.com/games/gettingstarted/multiplayer/

The installer is digitally signed from GameRanger Technologies.

How about adding in the latest CC release?

Also, how do you get around router firewalls - are you running a vpn driver like Hamachi?

cheers

Yes, I hope to add Wacht am Rhein soon.

GR does a lot of clever tricks for the networking, but it doesn't do anything driver-related.

I have maxed out my friends list at gameranger with 500 Close Combat players. I would estimate that over 1,000 Close Combat players have an account at gameranger.com now (March, 2012). On a week night you may see 4 or 5 rooms. Three, four times that on the weekends. All versions in one place.

Gameranger has been a great boost for the CC Community. Have you played CC h2h before? I am meeting new players all the time and some old friends. There is nearly 30 CC3 mods that have been converted for Cross of Iron. It makes for a good variety of h2h gameplay.

I have installed GR but when I did a search for Close Combat nothing came up.

Hey dlazov66, add me as a friend. No underscore US Brake

I use the Bar & Grill Chat Room

Gameranger will display game rooms up of games you have installed on your HD or you can go in options and add every CC game to view. So when on gameranger you should host a room so that others can see you, your new and no one has you on friends list yet. Add everyone you see with your game to your friends. You just right click the name to add. Over time they add up. You max out at 500 with gold account. The only thing I see on gameranger is my friends list and rooms of CC games hosted.

What is your gameranger name? dlazov66?

Brake,

I think it is just dlazov. I have not yet figured out how to use Game Ranger, much less CC, lol.

When I click on 'My Games' it's empty, as well as my friends. Looks like I can create a new group but no idea of what I am doing. When I did a search for "US Brake" for AccoutID I got no results. Just find you as a nickname.

Okay just figured out how to add/edit a group.

Still getting feet wet...

I have you added to my friends list. You will need the latest patch. And we can test your game out for h2h see if you connect ok.

Okay, I'll try to find you this weekend. I got CC COI with the patch from Matrix 3.06 I believe.
