Does anyone know if there is a way to get this to play in a window on XP?

The reason I ask is that I've just bought myself a shiny new windscreen monitor, and it looks terrible when stretched.

I know its a little late in the development cycle, but hopefully the new version will support playing in a window.

what size ? I just got a 25.5 and the new game, looks good on it full screen

but,  just looked and I am able to get the old game to run full screen too with out being stretched

but, I am not the one to say anything, Harley should be able to tell you better, if he reads the post

I do know that when Gary has dones some work/help for us, his Verison is Windowed, so other then saying try making a shortcut and placing the window commanded in the command line and see if that helps ????

(not sure, old game really was a dos version, so don't know if the Window command will work)

I've bought a 24inch Dell s2409w which has a 16:9 ratio, and the graphics are pretty strechted but just about playable. I've checked the usual stuff and can't get it into a window. Not to worry, its not going to stop me playing it. :)

Glad to hear that the new version looks good full screen.

Please know that this lurker appreciates the years of work you've put into this. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to the new version in due course.

I have a Dell 2408WFP which is basically the same thing with a different type LCD panel. If you look at your onscreen menus under "Display Settings" you will see an item called "Wide Mode" with three options.

  • 1:1 This option displays lower resolution screens in their native resolution and blanks out the rest of the monitor. This produces the best and sharpest presentation of the screen. Unfortunately with a 800x600 (or is that a 640x480) picture on a 1920x1200 display area, its going to look like a chessboard laid out in the middle of the superbowl stadium!!
  • Fill I believe this option is the default and it stretches the screen to completely fit your monitor. As your monitor has a 16:9 ratio, it has to stretch a normally square screen much further in the horizontal direction to achieve this and as you have seen the distorted results can be a little disconcerting.
  • Aspect This option expands the screen to fill the monitor but expands the screen equally in the horizontal and vertical directions. In your case the screen will be expanded until it reaches the top and bottom of the monitor and any unused monitor area on the sides is blanked out. This creates unsightly black bars at each end of the monitor but the picture in the center is so good you soon learn to ignore them.


I have set my monitor permanently set to the 'Aspect' option and the only time you ever notice it is when I run a fixed resolution program like old DOS games. Any modern program using windowed mode just adapts to the monitor size.

Unfortunately, the s2409w doesn't support scalar mapping in that way. Something I didn't realise when I bought it; I assumed that all monitors support it. The option is not in the monitor menu and is grayed out in the Nvidia control panel. I can do it on my 4 year old Hyundai.

Harrappan, That really is a nuisance... [:(]

The reason I went for the 2408 was it was full featured (and doesn't use a TN panel). Even if the monitor's internal menus don't support scaling, the video card should. But I see you've been there too. I really don't know what further to suggest as my Nvidia 6800 driver offers full screen, 1:1 and monitor or video card aspect scaling.

Hard Sarge, Have a look at the pictures below which are drawn to scale and see if this helps you get the most out of your new monitor. As stated above these modes cam be set either by the monitor or the video card driver. You will have to work out how to do it on your setup as every system is different.

By the way, I noticed from your screen shot I used below that the new BoB is in 1024x768 rather than 800x600.(I had to fire up the old game to make sure). Otherwise the game screen in the 1:1 row would have been even smaller.....
