iamspamus -> issues from last play session (11/20/2008 11:19:42 PM)

Hey ME,

How are you? So, I downloaded the 1.04.07 patch and gave it a go as Turkey. Here are a few issues that I encountered.

1. DoWed Egypt right away. I wondered about their setup in the N Sinai space. I think that the thinking is to bounce the opponent back to Palestine, right? But a lone corps moving around to the 4 space behind, negates that. I think that the best setup space is the 4 space just to the NE of Cairo. Just my $.02.

2. Russia dowed me again in Mar 05, only having two corps in the area...and they went after Circassia. He had a ton up by Sweden (never got there, but did leave Baggers and a corps just over the border from Finland to prevent the war lapsing.) They also had a stack near (but not in) Brest-Litovsk. So, after taking Caucasus, Ukrain, Crimea, Don, Astrakhan, and two more he surrendered. IF going to war, he should GO TO WAR...

3. What happened to the force march? It wouldn't let my feudal corps even have the option. Have I just missed that this is missing?

4. After bringing in antoher corps and killing the Russians besieging Adapa (Circassia), it kept telling me that Adapa was out of suply.

5. It wouldn't let me dow Tunisia, even though I had ships and an army in Egypt. It said I couldn't reach Tunisia.

Other than that it did pretty good. It continues to get better.

Ciao!
Jason

Honestly I don't see the point in this, if someone wants to DOW some country, just let them. Why bother with all this extra checking and nonsense? If the MP can't get to the minor that's the MP's problem.

Agree on #1. You can't effectively block the Turks, but Egypt actually has a chance (small, but a chance) of defeating the Turkish army. (The right chit and a good pursuit in the first battle can really leave the Turks hurting.)

#2. Yeah, some of the countries fight passably well, but Russia and Turkey just growl from a distance.

#3. Should be there, unless it went missing recently. You have to doubleclick the corps, as I recall.

#4. Did you actually lose any factors? If not, this is a Mantis-listed bug that only produces an erroneous warning, not an actual forage.

#5. There was a similar bug with Corsica, which got fixed, I believe. Could be the same thing. As I recall, that had something to do with winter. (Maybe the game thought the port was iced in? Can't remember. This could be similar.)

Aside from whether or not such DoWs would actually be realistic, there's the possibility that this could be used to drive minors into becoming somebody's free state rather early, and thus preventing people from taking them without being at war with a controlling major (or some wheeling and dealing with the new owner).

This might be more of a problem in EiANW than in original EiA, since minor diplomacy might guarantee which major gets the minor. One could see France paying Turkey to DoW a French-influenced Denmark, for instance.

Jason:

That is a great mini AAR and I appreciate the feedback!

1. I still like the AI's thinking here since it does split your forces a bit but let's face it, there is not much that Egypt can do here except delay Turkey and even that is really hard IF Turkey knows what she is doing...

2. Was an issue and is fixed in 1.05. Bascially Russia thought she was in danger when an invading army was half way across the world but still in Russia ... she panicked.

3. Nothing should have happened to forced march??? I will look at later...

4. Not sure here. Would like to see the actual game if possible.

5. I thought we had these situations resolved as well. IF you have the game then email her to me.

Thanks again for the feedback!

I agree with the Egypt setup as if the Turk goes around supply is more costly and easily cut off by the Egyptian corps, or even palestine could be grabbed by a greedy player controlling Egypt as it CAN be reached the first turn...

The Forced march comes into play after you have moved the 3 spaces and then click on another area (or double click) then it will ask you if you want to force march in a big pop up to let you know what you are about to do. I sometimes get that just trying to move the armies around.

The other issues are working well in the testing of 1.05 so far.. (except for the russian surrender but that is getting worked as we speak)

iamspamus -> RE: issues from last play session (11/21/2008 3:51:54 PM)

The current anti-Turk, Egyptian setup is sub-optimal.

1. The setup should only be used against the Turks. Against anyone else should be Damietta, Alexandria (if they can only reach there) or Cairo.

2. If fighting the Turks, they should have AT LEAST one feudal corps in Jerusalem. (I have 3). One of those feudal corps, I use an inf corps (bosnia) moves through the 2 one spaces of Sinai to the 4 space behind. So, IF he takes maximum losses , that's 5 guys. Then attack with your 3-5 remaining corps and good leader onto the Egyptians. Often times you'll win as the Turks, but if you don't then you have control of a space.

I did this twice last night. Once I won and once I lost the first battle. Either way, the Egyptian corps just sat there. It didn't attack my lone Bosnian corps behind it. It just sat on the 2 space and rolled for attrition.

3. In fact, thinking about it, I would move two feudal corps, one to the 4 space NE of Sinai and another one (by force march if an inf corps) on to Cairo on the first round.

All, in all it is a losing strategy, unless you play against a STUPID Turk, who merely attacks head on and gets stuffed. I've seen the AI Turk do this MANY TIMES. Then he sits there with 4-6 corps in Jerusalem forever. (This is similar to what Russia did/does when failing against Sweden.)

It's better to have the guy sitting in the 4 space. It doubles the Turkish supply (or forces them to roll attrition). And no one can get around him.

This is just my $.02.

#3 I never did lose any factors, it just kept telling me that the garrison was OOS.

Hey ME,

How do I email it to you? What's the address? I'll save it in a bit and then I can send it to you.
Jason

P.S. Russia surrendered unconditionally. I got Ukraine and whatever Podelia is now adding $16 to Turkey. Sigh. Nearly doubled my income...
