I've been doing some experimenting with the free product Open Office from Sun Microsystems.... and for whatever reason, editing the .xml files in Hired Guns doesn't work using the calc spreadsheet program in Open Office. You can view the files just fine with calc, but if you try to edit them, it doesn't like the format they were originally created in, and warns you that if you save it in the original format, some of the data may not be saved correctly.

Yes, i had the same problem! after you alter them with open office the gets some kind of different format and the game won't load. Additionally if you try to re-edit to its original values it won't work either. you need to have a backup copy of the file.

Good to know because I was going to use OpenOffice. I downloaded some other free xml editor that Erik suggested so will try that out but he also said the xml files in HG work the best with Excel, which I don't have. You can get a free Excel reader but not editor that I know of.

Your information is only partly correct...

I use Open Office 2.4.0

You can use open office Scalc to edit the XML files all you want ... I do and it works fine.
What you failed to note is that when you save the first time it gives you the message you stated above, *** just tell it to go ahead and save it in the old excell format and it works just fine *** Do not tell it to save in the Open Office format as that will not allow the game to load.
