Salutations,

I desire a fantasy capable tactical game that is moddable. [:)]

Actually, a computer version of the D&D Battlesystem. [;)]

Is such a game out there anywhere? Please point me to it. [&:]

Thanks.

Advanced Tactics comes to mind.

Not as "a computer version of the D&D Battlesystem" it doesn't.

SireChaos -> RE: Game Recon (12/14/2008 1:55:41 PM)

The closest I can think of would be The War Engine.

wdboyd -> RE: Game Recon (12/14/2008 4:22:24 PM)

Yes, The War Engine is very close to what I want, but I think it is actually more suited for a 1 to 1 unit scale representation. Plus I don't hink there is unit formation capability.

I played D&D before it was cool.

Not sure about what Battlesystem is... but there are plenty of D&D computer games. One of the most moddable are Neverwinter Nights and presumably Neverwinter Nights 2

Battlesystem was a system to fight large scaled Fantasy battles based on miniatures while incorporating D&D rules and abilities. It was a fun and good system but got fairly complicated when performing wheels and various formation changes. Of course a computer would now handle those.

We played through the module of The Temple of Elemental Evil which culminated with a huge good vs. evil Battlesystem battle, each hero commanding a certain part of a larger force. Ah, the memories.

Neverwinter Nights would be great execpt its unit scale is 1 to 1 and it doesn't provide for cavalry type units. Individual or troop size.

I wish it did. [:'(]

Oh yea, I can still remember my very first adventure as a level one fighter. It was in Keep On the Border Lands.

I was a fighter and had only 8 Hit points. Not much room for error. [:D]

I remember us struggling to get back to the keep and our small party being ambushed. My fighter staggering to safety with only 1 Hit point remaining.

Damn those lowly goblins. [:(]

Whew... It felt so real. Great memories. [:)]

Since when has it been cool ? I played and then grew to loathe D&D back in the mid 70's.

Never. That's the irony in it.

Might I ask what made you loathe something that you once enjoyed? Was it the changing rules? Elitist DM's with a god-like persona? The general mainstream that developed or something else?

Just curious. I haven't played in many years myself; wife, family, job...etc. but still have a fondness for such a distinct game. Heck, it was actually a stepping stone in my case when another gamer introduced me to wargames.

The rest was history (pun intended)

On reflection, how about 'Total War', if you can live with the real time?  It's certainly both the right scale and very moddable.

Pity they never did a Warhammer game that actually ever had anything to do with Warhammer.

I think I just grew up and out of it. In general I was always very put off by the personalities of the people who seemed to devote their lives to it and for a time, it completely displaced all other forms of gaming. Later I noticed that all the youth coming into the hobby were exclusively in D&D, (or some other Elfie Welfie spinoff) which choked off the more serious end that I was on.

Then came the negative social stigma, which still exists, which tainted almost all of the hobby. This was before DOOM of course which spread the misery of stigma around a bit. But you can still admit you played DOOM in a typical adult setting but you really have to be careful about saying anything related to D&D. Especially at work.

I feel much the same way about current 'mass market' PC games and consoles.
