SeanD -> First Major Update for Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge (12/18/2008 7:17:11 PM)

A crucial bug fix and plenty of balance tweaks come careening across the African countryside and onto hard drives!

Matrix Games and GFI (www.gfi.su) are pleased to announce the release of a major first update for the turn-based tactical hit, Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge. The comprehensive update brings the game to version 1.07.001 and provides many gameplay tweaks and a fix to prevent the “vanishing squad” icon bug appearing in new games started with this updated version.

Specifically, camera restrictions were substantially reduced to provide much more zoom and pan freedom in tactical mode, the AI now throws grenades less frequently and less accurately, weapons and mercenaries are now more lethal overall, weapons and armor appear more frequently at the weapons store, and other tweaks to make the game easier and more balanced on the “Newbie” and “Mercenary” difficulties.

David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said “Players who found the game too difficult or unbalanced at the Mercenary or Easy levels should definitely download this update. The game has been improved substantially in many areas and the overall Hired Guns experience is now much more enjoyable!”

Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge is a turn-based strategy game that puts you command of a squad of specialists for hire in the genre’s biggest game-world yet: the African country Diamond Coast. Diamond Coast is a playground for the cruel and corrupt, each with their own agenda. Choose your friends wisely and buy an army of ruthless mercenaries to unleash mayhem on your foes. Choose “jobs” from different factions and complete them for cash to upgrade your weapons and hire more elite soldiers of fortune.

Tons of firepower and plenty of combat experience will give your team the edge when it comes to fighting, but smooth talk and a wad of bills can also go a long way towards ensuring success. With multiple story lines and endings, you’re in total control of your own fate.

Get the update here. The update is comprehensive and will bring all versions of the game up to version 1.07.001.

SeanD, you're on staff with Matrix, right?  I've got a question for you regarding Hired Guns, and I'm hoping you can either answer it or pass it upstairs to the rest of the crew.  Is there any chance that we'll see a mission/map editor for this game?  If not, do the Devs have any suggestions for how we could jurry-rig one?  I understand this game hasn't exactly been a smashing success, but if they have released a patch for it, then there was at least some support.  A map editor of some kind could certainly help to increase popularity.

Hi Benton,

For a more detailed reply, you should probably post in the HG forum. However, I can say that I'm pretty sure there won't be an editor released, though a fair amount has been done and documented already on the modding front by a few dedicated modders.

Regards,

- Erik

Thanks Erik!  I very much appreciate the quick response.  I have posted in the HG forum, and I have been impressed with what the modders have been able to accomplish.  Unfortunately, without any way to modify the maps or campaign structure of the game, then modding development will be very limited.  I can certainly understand the lack of an editor, but I won't try to hide the fact that I'm disappointed.  This game would have limitless potential if we had the ability to tell our own stories through it.
