Longstreet_slith -> So...is AI now much better?? (12/19/2008 4:26:12 PM)

I am ready to purchase this game, but have been waiting as I will be exclusively playing against the AI and want a reasonably smart opponent. I know it can never be as good as a human, but I just don't want to play against an AI that is dumb as a stump.

So, should I buy this now? Should I wait a while longer until the next patch?

Thanks,
-Longstreet

I really enjoy this game. As far as the AI goes, it will probable never be good enough to challenge you on a regular basis. Eventually you will figure it out.
What I sometime do is provide a littel direction to the AI. I'll make it human controlled for a turn or three and invest in research or build specific units or move units to the front. This works particularly well if you have an AI German and want to give it a good start to Barbarossa. Then I turn it back over to AI control. The AI sometimes get confused and sends a huge number of armies to really odd places, like Greece, and then invades Russia so it needs a little help occasionally.

Hmmm...this does not sound like a "razor-sharp" AI that I thought was being touted. This is of major concern to me as I really do not want to do as you have described. I will have to think more on this one.

I believe the next patch is going to concentrate on the AI so things may change big time for the better.

Next update will be concentrating on many things.

So...doomtrader...what can you tell me about the AI? I really do want to purchase this game....and am straddling the fence so to speak...but I want a good AI opponent!

Feeling the same way myself lately. Would like a good game at this level strategically, but the shortcomings are rather well documented by those who have already laid down their cash.[:(] On the other hand, there are quick and numerous replies to any and all problems, and it seems that patches are being supported in a fairly robust manner.[8D] Didn't check what this one costs yet, but just paid over $100 for War in the Pacific when all was said and done.[X(] Not sure that I want to pay to be a beta tester, but then again being on the ground floor of griping about what bothers me to get the game I want might not be such a bad thing.[;)] Besides, whats a hundred bucks anymore? [:D]Definately thinking about it.[:)]

gwgardner -> RE: So...is AI now much better?? (12/20/2008 4:43:17 AM)

In my latest game, while the USSR AI put up a good fight early on, it fell later on because it was putting almost all of its PPs into air units.  It's going to be impossible to really judge how good the AI is until that can be changed.  For one air division, it could have built a dozen infantry divisions.  And it was building air armies.

I put a post in the mods subforum.  Hopefully someone will answer on how to alter those AI build orders.

Does anybody know? I've been rooting around this forum and I thought I saw somewhere where unit preference for the AI might be settable ? I've seen this mentioned before where the AI wastes it's points on air units instead of infantry. Can this be fixed ?

cpdeyoung -> RE: So...is AI now much better?? (12/20/2008 11:45:24 AM)

Good morning,

In the Mods and Scenarios post Doomtrader says they are checking to see if the code is handling the preferences correctly. If there is a bug I am sure they will work on it.

This game is a work in progress, with new version being worked on. There have been a ton of new, and good, suggestions flowing in. The game is great fun now, and I am testing so I have not gotten a chance to try some of the mods that Uxbridge has worked up. At this stage there is already much consideration for modding, and Doomtrader has said that this is an important consideration so I would be confident that it can "be fixed".

Wow, Thanks for the quick response. Read your AAR and that's what got me interested in this game. Might just buy it this weekend, we'll see.[:)]

Are you up really early, or really late?  It is early for me, and I am just about to make coffee.  It is a curious thing when checking a forum comes before coffee!

I just proposed a PBEM with Gary Gardner, and if he accepts I will try to make an AAR of it.  Remember that Matrix has a holiday special on now, and if you are going to buy be sure and get the discounted price by ordering in the time period.

Was up very early but went back to bed. Got WitP about 3 days before they anounced the holiday sale, but I've been around for a while so I should have known. Might as well buy this one while the gettin's good.

OK, went ahead and bought it, guess I'll dive into the manuel. Such as it is. I hate to be a whiner, but to spend $44 and not get even a cd let alone a printed manuel really chaps my hide. Guess us semi-oldtimers are just going to have to get used to the digital age.[;)]

cpdeyoung -> RE: So...is AI now much better?? (12/20/2008 10:31:28 PM)

Dear Dave,

Be sure and register the game so you can get the latest downloads.  You do this in the Members section.  Become familiar with saving and loading games, and find the Data\Save folder in your RTV folder structure to manage saved games.  I printed the manual out, but rarely have to consult it, but you are wise to dig in at this stage.  Play some "throwaway" games to get the mechanics down., then dig into a "Europe 1939" scenario.  I remember when I first played a "Poland 1939" and the mechanics were new, and I was a bit confused, but it goes quickly.  The mechanism for attacking can be a bit tricky, with the posibillity of making an attack when you meant to add more units to the attack.  Make sure you understand the one multiple attack per unit, per turn, which applies to Attacker, and Defender.  If you goof up big time, remember "Abort game, load Autosave" manouver!

Have a great time,

Chuck

I have noticed a significant AI improvement when placing the Italian army in North Africa. The advancing AI British can no longer cut off and surround every AI Italian unit put in its way. The Russian front is also much tougher if you modify the ZOC penalty by increasing it one or two movement points.
