About a realistic space combat sim and how I see it...

I just don't get all of the 2D space battles.  Not much XY and Z.

What is strange is that this is done wrong even in films.  In Star Trek, the Wrath of Khan, Spock states that Khan has a weekness in that he thinks in only two dimensions, but even then, the Enterprise just goes down and comes back up to the same plane and same angle of the other ship.  Why not just sit below it, and change the angle to attack the underside?

I'd really like some better 3D in all space games, and I don't mean better rendered graphics.

Perturabo -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/11/2009 4:37:08 PM)

Another thing that bugs me is why units get so close to each other and why fighters use fixed-mount weapons instead of turrets with auto-tracking.

Becouse that's the way it's in Star Wars and it looked cool: airplanes in space. But if you want some realistic starship combat on tactical level, recommendations goes for Starfleet Command II: Orion Pirates

Jeffrey H. -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/11/2009 7:28:33 PM)

Does anyone play Space Empires V ?

Lützow -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/11/2009 8:33:10 PM)

Wanted to reinstall SEV but it doesn't run on Vista.

Personally, I prefer airplanes in atmosphere[;)]. And zeppelins/real ships[:D].

Star Trek and realistic?

How? I can't see any text and according to SEV forums there is no workaround for this.

Hertston -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/12/2009 12:05:58 AM)

I don't have the problem, so haven't needed a workaround! I don't know how many others have; it's not something I play a lot so don't tend to visit the forums. I'm running 1.77 on a Vista 32 bit system with no trouble, and 1.74 was OK as well.

Yes, and so? I don't say it'd be the most realistic here, so Rules of Engagement serie or Nexus: Jupiter Incident could beat it on that. Haven't played those, so I don't know for certain.

Perturabo -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/13/2009 12:47:12 AM)

What's so realistic about it?

Titanwarrior89 -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/13/2009 2:00:16 AM)

I do. Great game I think.

...
About Battletech:
I played Mechcommander Gold, Mechwarrior 2, Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries, Mechwarrior 3 and Mechwarrior 4.
I liked Mechwarrior 3 the most as a mech simulation. I liked the story/campaign aspect of MW2:M/MW2.
I didn't like MW4 - it felt very rigid and archaic when compared to MW3.

...

I rarely look in this forum. I'm mostly in the SSG games and Panther games. I don't see too many references to MechWarrior any more so I had to jump in.

I played all these games on-line to the point where I got a bad case of carpel tunnel in my right arm. (spelling ..?? please excuse) I was lucky and some cortisone shots solved the problem. I loved that game but due to some work travel and other RL things I drifted away from it. That was (is) one of the best series of mech type (FPS I guess you could say) battle simulators ever IMHO.

I still crank up Mercs occassionally and set up some games with AI buddies to go out and blast the heck outta some Black Knights or Thors or whatever sounds fun at the time to shoot at. ... gause rifles, rotary cannons, ... dang, I get excited just talking about it. I haven't checked if they still play on-line any more.

Definitely the best on-line gaming I ever did. Mechwarrior rules.

RedArgo -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/15/2009 9:32:51 PM)

I play SEV (1.77 and 1.79) sometimes and it works in Vista 32 bit for me. I do get some white flashing screens every once in while which is a little irritating. I use the latest Balance Mod too.

I could never get the game to work, as the code in the box for copy protection didn't work, and since the box was open, the store wouldn't take it back. I still have it though, so if someone knows what the problem is, please PM me.

My son is into Star Trek, and I played Star Fleet Battles, so it would be nice to see what it can do.

Hey, let me recommend you BattleTech: rulebooks alone number THOUSANDS of pages and there are tricks that were overlooked in videogames. Rip off limb from fallen 'Mech and use it as a club, pick up and throw Elementals, assign Heat Sinks effectively cool particular weapon more effectively, use Coolant Trucks to restore heat dissipation capacity and replenish coolant tanks, effects of low/high gravity, thin/thick atmospheres, wide range of weather conditions (bug storm!), recovery and treatment of combat casualties, maintenance, repairs and other logistics, FrankenMechs!!!

Would you like to know more?

There are even computer games that follow these rules to letter. Recommendations to MekWars. Java required, recommended version: Java Runtime Environment 1.6 Update 11.

You mean password? I have it on pretty clean print, but there could be more sloppy versions where is difficult to make out B from 8, D from 0 or I from l/1. Try it again, and if it still wont pass, PM me and I'll let you try code of my box.

My adventure with the Battletech universe started with reading the Battletech Compendium. I always missed a lot of stuff from there when playing the computer games.

Oh my, yes. The Mech Commander games in particular were fun, but they weren´t really BattleTech any more. The Crescent Hawks´ Inception and the original MechWarrior at least tried, but the later games...

Unhappy -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/18/2009 2:32:03 PM)

I apologize if someone already mentioned this but if you are looking for a space combat simulation (ie. space ship vs spaceship) then I would recommend http://www.freeallegiance.org/ I haven't played recently but it is a fun/intense game.  It is a bit complex though, so it takes a while to get into it.

Actually the best team online game ever; and I'm not kidding. It just arrived a few years before it's time. I keep meaning to try it again, it's one of the very few games where I ever got into the squad/clan thing. I see they are still around (Steel Fury), but I only recognise one name from the old days.

I have to agree. Actually, I like the The Crescent Hawks´ Inception the best from all the BattleTech "official" interpretations on computer. Too bad that its infantry combat system is pretty horrible.

MVMASOFT.COM -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/21/2009 9:04:50 PM)

I can thank this thread for my compulsive buy of MOO2 from the local half price bookstore. Luckily it seems to run perfect as the windows 95 version in vista 64 bit. I might report back, but so far what I see is pretty darn cool.

Jeffrey H. -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/22/2009 4:54:12 AM)

That one has quite a fan following. I know one guy who plays and plays and plays it even though he's never even connected to the internet to patch it.

And too bad that - as far as I ever discovered - it only includes very light ´Mechs, except for the early training sim part.

Perturabo -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (5/23/2009 5:41:16 AM)

So, my Chameleon is the heaviest mech in game XD ?

Anyway, there are some more things that piss me off:
The game is a SFLfest thanks to the random encounter spam. I mean...
What's the deal with these old "RPGs" and the compulsion to have a combat encounter every 15 seconds? Especially when not-avoided encounter results in certain heavy wounds because there's no possibility of quickly killing opponents even when the character is a marksman?
It's just avoid avoid avoid fight avoid avoid go to hospital avoid avoid fight fight avoid go to hospital, etc. And it's just crossing a town. And... Kuritans with longbows? shortbows?! swords?!!
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???!!!

Anyway, the game is horribly addictive - I just sit for a moment and find myself playing it for 2 hours, non-stop.
It would be nice if there was a remake that would have high resolution graphics, better infantry combat system, more mechs, better vehicle combat system, no random encounter spam, and improved economy.

pvthudson01 -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (2/17/2010 10:02:23 PM)

I hate to necro bump a really old thread, but I gotta ask:

Do I spend my money on Gal Civ II expansions or dig in and get Sword of The Stars complete edition.

I want good combat (NOT RTS like Command and Conquer though) the ability to customize ships, take over planets, etc etc.

Which would you get if you have like 40 bucks?

Armada 2526 does not interest me.

Zakhal -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (2/17/2010 10:53:39 PM)

If you want good combat and ship customizing go for SOTS. Galciv2 ship battles are pretty poor and the ship customizing is just skin deep - mostly just visual.

BTW SOTS2 is in the works release is one year away. I can hardly wait it.

I can't say about Vista but I am running it on 64bit Windows 7 without an issue.

sabre1 -> RE: List of Current Space Sim / Space 4x Games (2/18/2010 2:17:18 AM)

I never could get into the RT space combat of Swords of the Stars, but YMMV.

I enjoyed GalCiv2, but ship combat is skin deep like Zakhal said, and again YMMV.

If you don't have Sins of a Solar Empire you really should check that one out, but again many liked it, and some didn't. I enjoy SOASE, and frequently go back to it.

Space Empires IV is highly regarded, but really dated graphics.

Space Empires V is flaky on Vista 64 machines, but there are work arounds, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort.

You could wait for Distant Worlds, or go for Armada, which from reading the posts, seems to be mixed.

I just haven't found that 4x game that just hooks me for that "just one more turn" feeling. I have hopes for DW, and Armada I'm waiting to see how that one develops. I am not a first adapter type.

Don't you just love indecisiveness.
