Some one is going to get in trouble for that hella of a list on that carrier. Might Fletcher be a bit upset?

IndyShark -> RE: Name This AE...186 (1/2/2009 11:10:22 PM)

USS Hornet at the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands being towed by the USS Northampton, October 26, 1942

RevRick -> RE: Name This AE...186 (1/3/2009 12:13:54 AM)

I'd like to see some more data... Looks like Northampton has just finished her approach to and awaiting Hornet to shackle up the tow line to bow, possible the anchor windlass before taking her under tow. The line on the bow of Hornet is still vertical, and doesn't show any strain on it yet, so I don't think she is technically under tow, but prepping for it. Besides that, the cruiser is to my eye way to close for there to be any towing going on, and there is a cluster of people right aft on the fantail who would probably not be there underway.

the Hornet before she was abandoned!

It does look like the Hornet has moved for some time, perhaps the picture was taken after the towline broke?

Wow..I thought your were making all that up, but now that I look closely I can see the line hanging from the bow.

wdolson -> RE: Name This AE...186 (1/3/2009 3:13:30 AM)

I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a tow line when it broke!

I believe the Hornet had the shortest commission of a USN carrier.  She was barely 1 yr in commission when she was lost.

Good book out about her...

DivePac88 -> RE: Name This AE...186 (1/3/2009 12:53:26 PM)

Think that the tow has parted, and the Northampton has come about. Hornet still appears to have a-little way on, and is very heavy in the water ( must have a-lot of water shipped).

Kingfisher -> RE: Name This AE...186 (1/3/2009 1:45:15 PM)

To think that in about 12 hours she will be under direct fire from the IJN.

That's CripDiv 1. Houston in the foreground, and I think Canberra in the background.
