Terminus -> RE: Name This AE...191 (1/8/2009 12:03:58 AM)

The battle off Samar.

MkXIV -> RE: Name This AE...191 (1/8/2009 12:23:05 AM)

FM-2's on Deck of one of the Taffey 3 CVE's I believe that is Gamiber bay in the back.

wdolson -> RE: Name This AE...191 (1/8/2009 12:36:42 AM)

Actually the two planes in the foreground are Avengers.  Note the one in back the landing gear retracts outward into the wing and both have the pitot tube stickin up off the port wing tip.

I do think it's probably Samar too, though it might be one of the other late war battles in which CVEs were hit by kamikaze's.  It might explain why the deck hands aren't scrambling to get the Avengers on deck off the catapult, which is what they did at Samar.  All aircraft were airborne as soon as physically possible.

Gambier bay with IJN Cruiser circled on the horizon

DivePac88 -> RE: Name This AE...191 (1/8/2009 1:46:35 AM)

Its St. Lo - because she was with other CVE's, while Gambier Bay was off with DE's Roberts and Johnston.

John 3rd -> RE: Name This AE...191 (1/8/2009 3:43:05 AM)

Run AWAY!

But the DD's and DE's didn't run........

MightyPaladin -> RE: Name This AE...191 (1/8/2009 5:09:45 PM)

when is the game gonna model the "hijack half-finished Marine-core airfield in mid-battle in order to rearm and attack the Japaneese fleet" ability?! rabblerabblerabble! [:D]

Man, that would make for a great movie. Rent yourself a Fletcher-class DD, and cast Bruce Willis as Evans on the Johnston. Wouldn't be a dry-eye in the house.

John Lansford -> RE: Name This AE...191 (1/8/2009 6:17:43 PM)

No one would believe it; a battlefleet of Japan's remaining battleships and cruisers retreating in the face of a handful of escort ships?  That's so incredible it could never have been historically accurate...

It would sell. Valkerie is a hit and we all know how that ends.

Barb -> RE: Name This AE...191 (1/8/2009 8:20:52 PM)

No please no another hollywood "absolutely out of reality" film based on "very lousely historical facts"... and Bruce Willis in no way.

You could put there DiCaprio and make Winslet a philipino girl in love with him with the same effect [:D]

I dunno, the facts as recounted seem pretty compelling. And Evans was apparently quite a leader, 3/4 Cherokee, something in the Waldron mold. Based on the principal's charisma alone, you'd need a "leading-man" type, rather than a character actor, Robert Duvall for instance, or Johnny Depp. [;)]

One of my distant cousins died on the Johnston
My sister in laws, mothers brother.
He survived it only to go back below deck to rescue his friends and never
made it back.
