LimeyBugger -> question: night fighting? (1/11/2009 4:25:18 AM)

I've spent the weekend at a friend's, playing the game, and while I can see it superficially resembles JA2, there's one (ok, lots) of elements which are missing which might identify itself as JA2's "rightful offspring" - night fighting.

Fighting at night was always a way to even the odds in JA2, on maps where there wasn't lighting sources, in any case. Being able to silently kill off half the opposing force, with night ops specialists - was a big element adding to one's tactical options.

However, there doesn't seem to be any night fighting at all. No matter what time the fight takes place, it always seems to be mid-day. As expected, lowly militia wade through small arms fire in their personal power battle armour (which never seems to drop) and auto-targeting guns (their hit rate seems to be extraordinary, regardless of the range or weapon used).

First impressions of the game are less than impressive. The game could have been vastly improved with a simple beta cycle - aside from the imbalance problems, the tactical issues could have been ironed out, as they seem to be within the engine's capabilities.

Or am I missing something here, and have I simply missed some hidden option?

**EDIT**
One other thing which confuses me - what's the point of "allow looting" option after fighting? Why -WOULDN'T- you? Isn't this sort of like, "allow breathing"?

Sadly there is no night fights.

Did you apply the offical patch? That clears up few of the issues with the Super AIs.

Also what ammo are you useing? OC or AP?

Have you been useing Max Aim?

What part of the body are you aiming at?

I always wondered about the looting thing at the end of battle myself.

Patch 1.007.001

I haven't played without the patch, but I can only shudder at the thought.

With regards to ammo and aiming - yup - max aim, torso shots, AP ammo when available (though still not in abundance at the stage I'm at). My issue here isn't that the AI is performing too well, so much as there doesn't seem to be much (if any) difference between ill-trained militia and regular army. Their accuracy and action points seem to be identical.

The game seems to have been released unfinished. No swimming, no night fights, lack of number of maps - all seem to indicate that the game was released when it was 2/3 done.

Early stages of the game torso shots are alright. But most of the militia have Class 1 vests on. Meaning unless you have AP rounds your not going to hit that solidly. The HP rounds are honestly paper weights unless your shooting for arms/legs/head. Till the Soldiers and guardsmen make there showing. Then it gets more tricky as they wear armored pants sometimes and class 2-3 armor along with helmets. You don't see them but they have them.

What mode are you on as well? I forgot to ask. It's recommended that everyone start with Newbie mode.

And ya the game was never totaly finished. There are things missing from it but it's still a solid little game given the chance, I found myself pulling my hair out for about a week befor I got used to how everthing handled.

Much love,
Reinforce

All good and valid points, LimeyBugger(lol, great name!). Especially the "Approve looting" analogy, considering that it often doesn't work anyway. Stick to manual looting like JA2 and you'll be alright.

Still, HG is a lot of fun. It's got some great physics and the way the mercs can strafe is very nicely done. It definitely was not finished, which is a real shame. This could've been an instant classic to mention in the same breath as XCOM: UFO Defense, but unless the missing features are added, or the LOS stuff is resolved, it's not going to quite reach those lofty heights.

Btw, I was very disappointed when I first started playing HG, too. But the longer I played it, the more fun I started having, and I started to see more of the good things in the game, and was willing to forgive some of it's lapses.

Reinforce,

Don't forget, the entry in the constantsXML ... Yeah, not true night with lighting but there is a difference ... I don't know the time for the day/night cycle ... maybe 6 oclock'ish.

So, you're saying that there _IS_ a "night combat" set of modifiers, and we're supposed to "pretend" that it's night, despite the map being a sunny desert?

Hrmm... brings me back to the old days of p&p D&D gaming - using an eraser as my character marker because we'd run out of figurines. I thought computer gaming had gotten past that. Sad day indeed, when I have to compare a modern game to Zork and find it wanting.

R@S -> RE: question: night fighting? (1/12/2009 12:26:53 PM)

Is it just me or does the day/night cycle seem to be reversed on some maps, the airport being one of them? On that map I've been able to spot enemies further away at night than I'm able to do at day using the same merc with the same weapon.

Edgewise -> RE: question: night fighting? (1/24/2009 8:46:13 AM)

I do not see any day/night difference on any map at any time.  Spotting ppl at long range seems a chance thing as long as you have LOS.

It's sad, that game has a LOT of potential but shows how unfinished it is. Few hours with the game and i already started modding it, trying to fix every things that seemed wrong, unfinished, unbalanced or missing. When i'm done though i will release it, i have lots of work done already but i keep adding and changing things :(.

Is there a way to tell if an enemy is wearing any armor, other than -2 damage when hitting them with HP ammo?
