Don't give credit or blame to Lemay for Regensburg.

According to the unit history of the 451st Bombardment Group (H), flying from Italy with the 15th Air Force -

"On August 16th the Group was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation (1st of 3) for its outstanding work in the bombing and destruction of the Messerschmidt Airplane Factory in Regensburg, Germany, February 25, 1944."

The Group lost 6 B-24s that day along with many badly damaged.

Oh, I do not blame LeMay for bombing my city, he just happened to lead the raid on that day. The factory was a very fine target and luckyly a few kilometers out of the city back then. After hitting the factory they flew to north africa, to avoid the fighters on their way back home, even if it was about 1500km instead of 900km back to England. This fist raid was on 8/17/43 there were several after this one, most of them out of italy later on.

Thank god all the heavy bomber raids against the factory and railway yards found their target, this saved Regensburg from the fate of many german cities. Our medival old town, in the city center, is one of very few, to survive the war. Now it is UNESCO world cultural heritage.

I have been in Germany a number of times, but it was only this past October that I really gained an appreciation of the destruction of the war. I was in a small town outside of Darmstadt (Modau) and in Oberstdorf and spent a lot of time learning the history and Geography of the area from my son's host family. Even Darmstadt, which is not that large of a City suffered tens of thousands of casualties ina fire-bombing.

The discussion stemmed from me expressing my appreciation for German Urban and Industrial Architecture and how many of the cities look so modern as a result.

It's my understanding that more than a few of these sailors drifted into town, were largely ignored by the locals, and returned to the camp when they got hungry.

Good story. Very civilized POW's ..and genteel capture.

I am amending mine. Chicago should be AF Size 5 (9).

O'Hare is way overstacked, there is not enough aviation support. There can't be any engineers in this hex, because it's not expanding either right now. We also need an Air HQ, because too many airplanes don't fly!

My City of Birth is Wetzlar, a small town (50 k inhabitants with suburbs) with remarkably lots of industry. The famous Leica Camera was invented there. During WWII, roundabout 2/3 of the Axles for german Tanks were produced there (Röchling-Werke). HI perhaps 60? Hills, Railroad. Port 0. AF 1. Oil 0. Res perhaps 100 (iron ore).

Edit: Perhaps i should also tell you that Wetzlar is in Germany. 60 kms NW of Frankfurt

Erbarmen! Zu spät - die Hesse komme! [:D]

My birthplace is Marburg, about 50 km north-north-east of Wetzlar.
Rural/hills, Railroad, Port 0, AF 3 (I know of a bomber strip at a village nearby that was used to attack France in 1940).
Manpower 2, Oil 0, Ressources maybe 30 (food, gravel), HI at least 300 - nearby town of Stadtallendorf hosted two huge ordnance factories (said to be the biggest ammo and explosive plants in Europe during the war).

Small world - I have studied History at Darmstadt. The town was selected in September 1944 as a target for the first test of a new bombing tactic (fanning-out of the bomber stream over the target) - simply because it had been spared heavy destruction up to then (being a small 'big city' of just above 100.000 inhabitants and lacking any important industries) and because there were few bigger cities worth bombing left.
The goal of the new tactic was to optimize area bombing in order to create a fire storm - it is said that the same tactic was later used at Dresden. About 230 Lancasters and a dozen Mosquitos made a concentrated attack (less than 30 minutes) on the inner city, creating a fire storm which destroyed 99% of the inner city and 78% of all city structures. About 12.000 people died, ten-thousands more were injured and 66.000 people lost their homes - out of a population of 110.000 inhabitants. 20% of the victims were children under 16. It is regarded as one of the worst examples of 'terror bombing' directed against the civilian population and not at military targets.
Because of this, Darmstadt and most other German cities of certain size may now look modern, but many sad decisions have been made during reconstruction and most cities can hardly be called 'pretty' - reinforced concrete rules... [:(]

Sorry, this has been quite OT...

Port 2(2) Shallow draft harbor at Newport Beach [:)]

Fortifications: 2 (a few coastal guns in concrete emplacements in Huntiungton Beach)

Industry...not so much I guess, although a great deal would be right on the border with LA

The "WItP has taken over thread" made me think about where I live and what it would be if on the WItP map. Using WWII era figures I live in:

Toledo, Ohio (Urban hex, forts 0 and lots of RR's, temperate zone - though the -15 F temp yesterday makes me question that)

AB 2(2)
Port 3(3)
Manpower 5 (just a WAG)
HI 200 (I figure it had to have been bigger than Hanoi. Lots of stuff built here including all those Willys JEEPS)
Shipyard 10 (small shipyard here with a drydock. Built USCG cutters and most notably USCGC Mackinaw)
Oil 10 (Another WAG but the Lima-Trenton field is just south of here and produced a lot in the WWII era)

Today the only change would be AB 4(4). The airport houses the 180th TFG plus a Burlington Air Hub - 12,000 ft runway. Plus there are no fewer than 3 "fighter strips" here too

edit: forgot the hex characteristics

Am also a Toledo native...does your oil number include the many oil refineries on the East side (that sadly are now gone)?

wdolson -> RE: Where do you live in WItP terms (1/23/2009 10:54:40 PM)

I don't know, I wouldn't call anyplace that ever got down to -15F a temperate zone.  Compared to Siberia, maybe.  Compared to Seattle (all time low 0F, all time high 100F, snows about one winter out of three), not so much.

AE includes refineries as well as light industry.  So Toledo would have a large number of refineries, but only a small amount of oil.

Why did the refineries close?  The US is chronically short of refining capacity these days.

Bill

bradfordkay -> RE: Where do you live in WItP terms (1/23/2009 11:05:05 PM)

In standard WITP, those refineries are considered to be Heavy Industry, aren't they?

Well, my dad worked at the Pure Oil (later Union Oil) refinery up to about 1965. Believe that Union Oil felt that it was obsolete and closed it down. Gulf Oil and Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio) also had refineries since shut down. The only one left I think is the Sunoco refinery. From the stories I heard, the closed refineries required beaucoup maintenance and were not cost effective, particularly when gas was 30 cents a gallon at the time.

In stock WitP, oil goes into HI and fuel comes out, so I view refineries to be part of HI.
