Shakespeare -> Games like Imperialism I and II (1/20/2009 7:28:40 PM)

Hello,

I am a big fan of Imperialism and was wondering if there were any games that have come out recently or are comiong out soon that are similar. I just picked up Commander: Napoleon at War and while it was good, for me it lacked a great deal of replayability. Once you have won as each side at the hardest level, it loses its single player replayability. One thing I liked about Imperialism was the random maps etc. I recognize CNAW is much more historically accurate game and I actually think it is quite good, but I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for someone looking for an Imperialism type game.

Thank You,

Matt in Phx.

What a coincidence, I just pulled Imperialism 2 out a couple days ago and started playing again. It is one of my all time favorites.

Crown of Glory looks to be good, but lacks the random element you are looking for. I think that would be a great game to add the option for random maps and setup. Paradox has Europa Universalis 1,2 & 3. Which cover the same time period, but are real time. I've never played those though.

EU 3 is a quite good game (but only with addons), of course the map is always real, but there is plenty of mods.

But you might also check this one:

I loved both Imperialism titles as well and would love to see something similar.

Yes I always felt Imp and Imp II were excellent strategic games, with one of the more intelligent AIs. I also reinstalled Imp II a few years ago and have been replaying it. To be honest there really isn't anything quite like it that I have experienced. It really isn't historical in any meaningful way and the tactical battles are kind of cheesy, yet there is something decidedly engrossing about the gameplay that keeps me coming back. I have played CoG and the EU series, and while they are both good games, neither imo has any resemblance to Imperialism.

I have never played imperialism....but have you tried the Dominions series (their up to Dominions 3 now). It does have random maps and tones of strategic gameplay.

Its on the fantasy side though...
