Armorer -> Air Combat in UV (5/6/2002 9:54:44 PM)

Greetings,

I've been lurking here for quite awhile, and have a few questions re: the air-combat routine.

In looking at the new screnshots posted by Erik R (thanks, by the way), I see that the Corsair's maneuver rating is 37, which is only 4 points better than the Boomerang. Now, if the Maneuver Rating is just that, the respective planes' MANEUVERABILITY rating (in other words, how well it loops, barrel rolls, turns, etc), I'll have to defer to the designer's good judgement re: each individual aircraft's ratings - at least until I've seen them all. However, if it's rating is considered to be one all-inclusive value, as in Pacwar, I've got some problems with the Corsairs rating being only 4 points higher than the Boomerang. I did notice that there is a max speed value, so I'm hoping that the Maneuver value isn't the end-all/be-all that it was in Pacwar (and every other GG game I've played).

Anyway, I'm beginning to ramble, so I was hoping a beta tester would be willing to post the formulae that are used in the routines (if they're provided in the game - if not perhaps someone from Matrix could help out).

Thanks a lot,
Randy

Erik Rutins -> Air Combat... (5/6/2002 10:09:24 PM)

Randy,

I don't know the precise calculations, but I can tell you that as it's been explained to me, the air combat routine compares/contrasts the various planes when they engage to see where each can get an edge. Everything related to the aircraft is factored in, as well as the skill of the pilot in determining whether the best tactics for the current opponent are used.

I can say that anecdotally, the Corsair is a superb aircraft that has served me very well when I've played as the Allies and caused me a significant amount of hair loss when playing the Japanese.

Anyway, I figured I'd give everyone some more data to chew on. Here are the summary lines in the database for all Japanese fighters (this post) and all Allied fighters (next post). This isn't everything, but it covers the important stuff.

Regards,

- Erik

U2 -> I like it! (5/6/2002 10:20:40 PM)

Great stuff! Thanks Erik. Any possibility to give us the japanese planes?;)

Still surprised though that the Boomerang is so close to Corsair ( a great fighter ) except for speed. Perhaps I am wrong in never reading about a fighter that I always thought was Aussie junk:D

Thanks again

Dan

Erik Rutins -> Right. (5/6/2002 10:25:06 PM)

Dan,

When you compare the Boomerang to the earlier Wirraway, which it replaces, you'll come to love it. Overall, I think it's a very decent plane with good range and capabilities.

As for the Japanese fighters, check my first post. A more complete list of planes will have to wait - don't want to give out all the candy at once! :)

Regards,

- Erik

U2 -> Hi! (5/6/2002 10:34:03 PM)

Hi!

I did not expect you to give out more but it never hurts to try:)
Anyway I am sure that Boomerang is a nice airplane that I will come to enjoy in the game. I am 100% sure that Gary and the team is correct.

Thanks again

Dan

Erik, thanks for the quick reply. Also, the info and shots are appreciated. You guys at Matrix are doing an outstanding job in responding to our requests, and it's greatly appreciated.

I was wondering what the beta testers think as far as how the air combat routines seem to work. This was always Pacwar's biggest failing, IMO. The system didn't always give the results that I believed would have been typical, especially late war. Anyway, any input from the testers would be appreciated. BTW, I've really enjoyed the AAR's - great for giving me a fix till the game actually shows up on the doorstep.

Thanks
Randy
