I've been playing COG for a long time now, and this has always beena problem on all pcs ive had (all of which far exceed the requirements of the game), the Trade map when i put it on always makes the game lag, this is annoying as its the ONLY way to see where to put merchants.

Anyone got any help for this? and if not will it be 'cured' in the emperor version?

and as a note, cog is best game ever [:D]

I don't remember noticing that in COG, but in COG:EE you figure out where to move a merchant fleet by clicking on it and then looking at the numbers that appear in the sea zones -- just as one decides in "Forge of Freedom" where to move blockade runners. Here's a screenshot:
