B-18s - but when and where? Looks like late 41/early 42 at PH.

B-18a's at Hickam field after Pearl Harbor[&:] 5th Bombardment group?

AW1Steve -> RE: Name This AE...218 (2/3/2009 6:18:04 PM)

B-18's at Bellows field after Dec 11, 1941 when they had been transferred. 5TH bombardment group.

OK, one more try. B-18s parked next to hanger 13 on Deceber 17, 1941.

Here is another shot taken at same time , showing it with the famous one of the burned out B-17c.

As everyone is in exactly the same position, I'd say it was the same shot as Brady's, though his is sharper.

Bit of an ugly aircraft the B-18.

AW1Steve -> RE: Name This AE...218 (2/3/2009 9:59:17 PM)

It truly is. One would have a hard time beliving that it decended from a DC-2.

wdolson -> RE: Name This AE...218 (2/4/2009 12:56:56 AM)

It is an ugly beast.  The lineage is clearly visible in the tail.  The wings are the same as a DC-2 also.

I wonder if the ugliness contributed to its failure as a bomber.

IIRC the B-18 and B-17 were tested against each other, but the B-17 crashed on takeoff, which didn't do much to make a good impression. So I might take the Bolo's failure the other way around - adopted in 1936 (in the middle of the Depression), it was selected because it was cheaper than the Fort and "there ain't gonna be no war." The DC-2 was a reliable airframe, and it was really the war effort that drove advances in aeronautics.

Just my 2 cents.

When I first looked at that pic, I thought the thing had crash landed!  Talk about NO clearance underneath it!  Wow...

Brady -> RE: Name This AE...218 (2/4/2009 6:39:59 PM)

B-18, it is[:)]

Hickum, it is[:)]
