Terminus -> RE: Name This AE...220 (2/5/2009 7:50:48 PM)

Looks like Gurkhas awaiting their plane ride.

Local Yokel -> RE: Name This AE...220 (2/5/2009 8:01:22 PM)

But not a kukhri in sight so far as I can tell.  Anyhoo, aren't we expected to identify the fuel bowser visible beneath the Dakota's fuselage?  Perhaps it's another Laffly.

khyberbill -> RE: Name This AE...220 (2/5/2009 8:25:14 PM)

Maybe kukhris were worn on the right side.

AW1Steve -> RE: Name This AE...220 (2/5/2009 10:20:05 PM)

Ghurka rifles waiting to board their Dakota 1. And I'll name it Donna. [:D]

Vampir -> RE: Name This AE...220 (2/5/2009 10:33:39 PM)

Dakota Mk. III (C-47A) serial number FL 503.
Douglas C-47A-45-DL 42-24092 (c/n 9954) to RAF as Dakota III FL503. Sold to Indian government Jan 30, 1947.

Shows ya how little I know about the SE Asian theatre. I had no idea the Gurkhas did paradrops.

They didn't. It would be a huge surprise to these guys , as they have no paratroop gear (like parachutes!). They are probably just being airlifted in (as where the Chindits). [:)]

wdolson -> RE: Name This AE...220 (2/6/2009 12:42:16 AM)

If they were paradropped, they would land headless.  Paratroops don't wear flanged helmets because the air resistance when they are dropping puts a lot of strain on the neck.  I've read the Germans found this out the hard way when developing their paratroops in the 1930s.

The harnesses hanging in the plane were what I was noticing. Figured the parachutes could be undistributed as yet. Wasn't aware of the helmet issue but it makes sense.

Those are static lines for cargo drops.
