Japan -> Effect of Officer Rank (2/21/2009 1:30:23 AM)

Hello

I have browsed the Forum, and looked through the Manual but don't find the answer to this.

What is the Actual Effect of a Officers Rank ?

Personally i have used Higher ranked Officers when commanding larger forces ect, it feels more natural.
But I have never found any diagram or description of the Actual "numerical" differences ie penaltyes ect.

I assume a Conoal should not command a Army and a Captain not a Fleet, but what is the actuall effects of it?

Any who has Information about this ?

No actual "benefit" per se'.

But for is "needed" (top of my head)

DD/SS - Lt Cmdr or Cmdr
CL/CA/CLAA/BB/BC/CV/CVL/CVE - Capt.

Note that if you really do have nothing better to spend your PPs on, you can comb thru ships.  Some of your transports have Capts assigned to them with decent stats, that you might want to yank and assign to capital ships.

Those Japanese warrant officers and USAAF majors are particularly useful...

But could you in theori do things like putting a Capt in charge of a Huge Battlefleet and a Conoal in chare of an Army Hq?

Absolutely. I used to ask way back in the development days what the effect of leadership was, and got no satisfactory answer. All I could conclude was that there is no effect at all.

Of course, I would prefer a colonel to a Conoal, whatever that is.

Sort of.

1.  If you DON'T assign a TF commander to your TF, the leader in charge of the flagship, is the fleet commander.  So you Capt in charge of say Akagi will the fleet commander if you haven't selected one.  If you do choose to assign a TF commander, you'll see a list of your Admirals, plus the single Capt of your flagship.
2.  The leader bug will sometimes throw some interesting leaders into the mix.  Every so often, you'll see some odd options in commander selection, and it's probably because somewhere along the line, one these wierdos got assigned command of one of your ships.

Generally, no, you won't see the option to assign a Major to CentPac or a TF command to a Lt Cmdr (unless he's in charge of the flagship).  But occasionsionally, yes, you'll see a quirk.

And here I am. The bottom line seems to be that you can assign from the list of commanders you are provided, and nobody less than a captain is offered for command of a TF (except for PT, transport, and mine warfare TFs and the like).

Even without the leader bug, I always thought of this as one of the great weaknesses in the game, particularly as it was advertised as depending so greatly on the qualities of leadership (good idea, horrible in the execution).

I haven't asked in the AE thread the degree to which that mod addresses this, because I'm afraid to. I always prefer jollying myself along when living in a fantasy world...

But it does depend greatly on the qualities of leadership...the player's leadership[:D]

Ah, go back to helping the batmensch struggle into his kinky little costume, Alfred.

Then, the game design tries to minimize your powers by assigning various things to AI "subcommanders," who ought to be hung from the highest yardarm in the fleet for insubordination, incompetence, and cowardice in the face of the enemy.

See, my problem with WitP was never what it is, but rather, with what it attempted to be and failed at...
