Nemo121 -> Vista 64 and games. (2/25/2009 12:49:18 AM)

Hi, I'm going to get Windows Vista 64 on a new computer --- need it because there's a piece of hardware ( 3D capable monitor ) due out soon over here which I really want to try which is Vista only ---- and my question is about games compatibility.

Basically will Vista 64 ( with a bit of fiddling with settings ) run Windows XP games - e.g Il2 1946, War in the Pacific, Combat Mission etc or would I be better going for a dual install? I have a spare copy of Windows XP I could surely install onto the machine for when I don't want to run a 3D capable game.

Any advice would be appreciated. I've always steered clear from Vista cause of all the horror stories about compatibility and memory but I really, really want to play Left 4 Dead etc with 3D effects so I'm about ready to make the jump.

I do not know if this helps, but I run WitP on Windows 7 64-bit beta. I have had no problem playing the game so far. Do keep in mind that there are third party utilities that rely on 32-bit DLLs that will not work on a 64-bit OS.

Also be aware that you may have installs that completely disappear. My very first install did that. I had bought Sins of a Solar Empire (I'm on 64 bit) and everything looked normal; shortcut on the desktop, the whole works. Turned it off and rebooted the next morning and it was gone(including the shortcuts). I did a search for various possibilities on the C drive (sins, solar, etc) and found nothing. Aye, but it was on the computer as it turned out. It was masked behind the windows start button, in a section called games. How it got there I have no idea and I still can't find it on the hard drive. There are other games that came with the computer (Gateway) in that section too. I have installed like 4-5 pieces of software since then, including two games, and have had no reoccurence of this weird problem.

Vista 64 has two places it puts software, there is the Program Files (which is for 64bit software) and the Program Files (x86) (Which is where old 32bit software is loaded).
Not sure about the games issue.
I never updated from XP to Vista, I always build my sytems from scratch using only Vista approved hardware and I have never hada issue except with running older game software.

I upgraded to a new vista64 box a couple of months ago, and I have not has any problems really. So far I like it. I have a lot of Steam, and impulse games, and they have not had any problems. It even ran the original CC2 with no problems. TAOW3 works fine too.

I've been able to get all my Matrix games up and running on Vista 64 bit system, except for Advanced Tactics. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I tried it on a friends 32 bit Vista laptop and it behaved beautifully. Thanks.

Got AT running on my system perfectly. Vista 64bit. Only real problem that I had was my printer wouldn't work with 64bit. Canon only provided a 32bit driver.

I installed it from my external harddrive onto my new pc. Maybe that'll help.
Otherwise post your thread in the AT forum, you'l bound to get a soulution within a few hrs.

If you are doing vista 64 in your PC than you must keep good speed ram like at least 2GB ram than your vista will go fine and games as well i am using it personally.
