Is there a guide or step by step somewhere that I can use to help me?

I don't know what you mean - i thought it's self explanatory. In each case change it from a 256 colours .bmp (8 bit) to 24 bit before you edit anything.

What software do you use to edit it? I have Adobe Illustrator.

Corel 11 (rather old, but still is okay for me). Have lately been tweaking around with paint.net and Gimp (freeware). Don't know Adobe Illustrator.. isn't it especially for vectors ...? Why not photoshop? Or, as it's freeware, Gimp?

I'm not sure how those other programs work, but here is what is going on in Illustrator.

When I import the Numbers.bmp file, it imports as a "grouped object". The problem is that Illustrator won't allow me to "ungroup" the "grouped object" in order to work with the individual numbers and symbols. Will other programs allow me to import the Numbers.bmp file as an "ungrouped object" so that I can work with the individual numbers and symbols?

Personally, I just use the plain old Windows Paint program. If what you want to do is make the "squad" size indicator look like the "battalion" size indicator then that just requires a bit of copying and pasting. It's easy. Be sure to blow the view up to 800% so you'll be able to make single pixel sized selections.

Curtis,

Yep. That's what I kinda figured I was gonna end up having to do. I've done it with flags (since I have the same problem with Flags.bmp), so doing for Numbers.bmp is okay I guess. I just hoped there was an easier way.

I'm going to make three separate Numbers.bmps. One that uses the company symbol, one that uses the battalion symbol, and one that uses the regiment symbol to overlay the squad symbol (I don't intend to play scenarios smaller than having companies as the smallest unit size or larger than having regiments as the smallest unit size).

there are a lot of free programs that would let you edit bmp files - i use Infaview
