roeddog -> "Taking Chance" A movie review (3/4/2009 8:30:43 PM)

Hi all,
I just saw this movie today and all I can say is wow! From the IMDB plot here is the synopsis of the movie

"Based on real-life events, Lt. Col. Michael Strobl (Bacon), a volunteer military escort officer, accompanies the body of 19-year-old Marine Chance Phelps back to his hometown of Dubois, Wyoming."

I rarely get emotional, the good Lord just didn't see fit to wire me that way, but by the time I got to the end of this movie I had gone through a half roll of Scotts TP. As it says, it's based on real life events, so I don't know how much of it is "real" and how much "artistic license" but if even half of the events as portrayed happen to our kids when they take their final journey home... well I don't want to spoil the movie.

The movie is totally a-political which is good, it leaves it up to the viewer to decide their stand on the war.

Amazon link to the movie.

I know it's not much of a review but if I say too much it'll give the movie away, sorry.

Sorry m8...not directed at you...but a very similar thread popped up some time back with right wing left wing and liberals jumping all over each other!

fwiw, as you're the second person to mention it, I'll give it a look...so your post hasn't been in vain!

Normal again.... It has had good reviews:

so it may be worth a view, but not for me. Can't afford the tissues.

you have a good point Judge with the right/left/center arguments. I originally started to go down that bunny trail with my thoughts on the movie and then deleted it, I didn't want to do that to this movie. You can easily make an argument one way or the other after watching it, but the movie itself is completely free of politics, it just follows the events of the Col. as, I suppose, he recorded them in his journal and escort report. At no point does he or any of the other actors question the war other than their own personal actions within it. Had it leaned one way politically or another I wouldn't have even brought it up. I'm a political junkie and love the debate but these forums aren't the "best" place to do that so I avoid it and post that go down that road.

Without going to far into the movie so as not to spoil it, I kept waiting for someone to steal the body or the casket considering the title "Taking Chance" I thought it was a type of crime or thriller movie, its not until a little further into it that you get what the movie is about, lol.

I saw the trailer last week, looks good. I don't pretend to understand or even be particularly interested in the politics, so that debate would be way over my head. Kevin Bacon is always worth a watch too, so I'll probably go for it on DVD.

Thanks for the review roeddog

I watched this movies a week ago with my wife-she did use up a few tissues. I thought it was a well done story with decent actors. It is not an "action flick"-it tells of the activities involved with returning a Marines remains. I know of 8 men who have seen this movie and all agree it is a good film.

On the emotional stuff; it was really surprising to see the difference between guys that had military service and those that did not. The former military men did not tear up at all (or lied about it) whereas each of the 4 non prior military service guy's did get misty eye's. One of my lib buddy's (a former college football player-a big dude) said he get's goose bumps thinking about the movie-I was shocked.[:)]

I found "Apocalypse Now" much more emotional.
