Miller -> Computer sub ops (3/7/2009 4:26:36 PM)

Playing as allies and now into 43, I have almost 100 subs to play with.......far to tedious to move every single one of these every turn. How does the computer handle them?

I remember from my UV playing days that they seemed to be able to "home" in on enemy TFs.

Some people claim good results from this, however: once you put ANYTHING on computer control, unpredictable things will often happen... for instance: put a TF on computer control, and your troops in NW China decide to start marching to somewhere obscure without your knowing about it.

One thing that I am pretty sure works is to move them under player control to a location you want to patrol and then put the subs on computer control. When a TF is spotted they will try to intercept it. But, you never know what the computer will do to you.

You don't need to move them all. Use the Ops log and move those spotted and the combat log for those in combat.

Best thing to do is group the subs in 2 and 3's and send them in the japanese shipping lanes, sure you won't sink any big battlewagons, however I have over 40 AKs and AP's sunk in less then a year, while they head to Ancourage to replenish and repair so the drive time is quicker.

Honestly I tried intercepting TF's with 8-10 subs and it does little good before 1/43.

It can make a huge difference on who you are playing. Against the AI you can do what you say. Against a human player, they will tend to have large concentrations of Naval Search air over their convoy routes. That results in lots of sunk subs.

100 subs manually controlled means a lot of Japanese merchants providing homes for local marine life

Pistachio -> RE: Computer sub ops (3/7/2009 10:45:59 PM)

Never play with anything set to auto....[:-][:)]

True but the IJN has far more APs and AKs than it will ever need in the game. Tankers are the only worthwhile targets......

marky -> RE: Computer sub ops (3/8/2009 3:29:48 AM)

in slight defense of auto sub ops, they do dramatically increase sinkings

they seem to home in on shipping lanes.

IE, while i was still playing the AI, my subs never seemed to get any hits, so i thought hey why not let the computer have a shot. sinkings skyrocketed, and it was not unusual for 4-7 ships a day to be torpedoed

i still prefer manual sub ops though

bradfordkay -> RE: Computer sub ops (3/8/2009 3:43:24 AM)

In UV I noticed that subs on auto sub ops tended to travel from one enemy port to another until it was time to head for home. Because the AI tends to route shipping in a similar manner, this probably places them in the same routes that the enemy convoys use - so it might just increase the chance of sighting an enemy TF.

In a PBEM this is probably less effective, since humans like to vary the routes their TFs take so as to throw off the enemy's subs.

And since the AI uses lots of small unescorted transport TFs, it just gives more targets overall.[8|]

One thing I did was put my subs in position, change them to computer controlled and let them become homing arrows to task forces, I can't say this isn't bad idea since I nailed Yamato and Musashi both with a torp each. Both were around Rubaul and I had 5 OZ subs through out the lane to Truk and sure enough for 2 turns the subs didn't move then all sudden they all moved towards 1 little TF. I guess AI is a better guesser because I always try to move my subs in the next Hex its likely to goto, I think the AI knows better how far each ship is likely to go, assuming the warships are at full speed.

Merchant ships tend to be 2-3 HEX at most, I usually can catch them easily with subs on human control, warships with 5+ HEX tends to have me dot the "flight path" and hope and pray with my 80% DUD/Miss rate.

My advice...sortie 20 or so every turn and don't put them on computer control. You're more than likely going to regret putting them on computer control as they end up in the stupidest, most useless areas on the map.

Just my experience with it.

Panther Bait -> RE: Computer sub ops (3/9/2009 7:47:17 PM)

Another thing to save a little time.  If you are sending a group of subs to a target area (say between Formosa and the Home Islands) send them in on big TF rather than separate ones.  They aren't real likely to run into something on the way over anyway, and it save a lot of clicking and scrolling.  When they get near the target area, form single sub TFs there.

With US subs, I tend to give them multi-turn paths to keep them busy in the same general area and keep them moving (to make ASW TFs harders to vector in based on plane spotting).  That means you only have to touch them once every 2 or 3 turns rather than every turn.

When playing Japan I usually send out commerce raiders grouped with a Glen sub and vector the wolf pack to intercept convoys as they are detected.  The Glen-subs don't have to move much (particularly if you are a little ways away from the nearest AF) and the wolfpacks tend to stay in place (in a line or arc across known convoy routes) until something shows up.

Odin -> RE: Computer sub ops (3/10/2009 9:16:19 AM)

In my current game my subs are messing up japanese shipping, with 6-10 ships hit every turn.

I played the 43´ campaign, its now mid-november and they sunk around 400 japanese ships already.

There are only two things i dont like:

- Mostly they hunt directly south of Japan, were air cover is present in numbers, and not were i want them (Convoy route Balikpapan-Osaka for example)

- Sub TF´s with their Subs damaged have to be manually disbanded in their home ports.

Better then me mate, August 42 I get 1 hit of 10 torps fired. Don't we all just love the Mk 13 Torp before 1/43?
