Oh, I can't wait to hear about this one! Don't think I've ever seen rank patches under helment netting ever in WW2

Are these Japanese Americans?

Re: Kiska -
"Admiral Ernest King reported to the secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, that the only things that remained on the island were dogs and fresh brewed coffee. Knox asked for an explanation and King responded, "The Japanese are very clever. Their dogs can brew coffee.""

These are the guys that discovered the fresh brewed coffee - and that's why they are smiling...[:)]

rtrapasso -> RE: Name This AE...250 (3/8/2009 2:21:51 PM)

Can't quite make out the crest on the shoulder of one guy who has the (apparent) Kiska invasion shoulder patch on the other shoulder... but it MIGHT be the patch from the 87th Mountain Combat Team... here is the original Kiska patch:

rtrapasso -> RE: Name This AE...250 (3/8/2009 2:25:11 PM)

Here is a (sharpened) detail of the patch in the mystery photo:

rtrapasso -> RE: Name This AE...250 (3/8/2009 2:45:28 PM)

OK - on further research, i am guessing these are CANADIAN troops, from either the 6th or 7th Infantry Division, although the Devils Brigade was involved so maybe they could be from that... the Canadians wore nets on their helmets in the operation - here is a shot of Canadian troops on board ship about to invade Kiska

Cap Mandrake -> RE: Name This AE...250 (3/8/2009 3:52:41 PM)

It looks to me like they have the Kiska patch mounted blade down on both sides of their jackets.

There is also a disc shaped piece of equipment with fabric or canvas cover saying "US" (canteen maybe).

At least one soldier has waterproof waders. The tone of the uniforms look GI to me.

And it looks cold. US 7th ID maybe?

Most of them appear to have this... there is one i am not sure about...

From pics i've found, it looks like (unlike the ETO) the Canadians were using a lot of US equipment, including uniform items (helmets and the like)... the First Special Services Force (FSSF, aka Devil's Brigade (although i don't think they had that name until later)) was a joint US-Canadian force, and so would have a mixture of troops... this was their first "combat" operation.

rtrapasso -> RE: Name This AE...250 (3/8/2009 4:51:23 PM)

As long as we are identifying stuff : those are M-1 Garands, and there is an M-1 Carbine lying above/to the right of a shovel/entrenching tool cover (marked "US").

i am not sure what the regular Canadians were armed with, the from the pics i've seen, the rifles didn't look like M-1 Garands (although the pics lacked detail)... i don't think that excludes the FSSF, though.

Also, the guy in front is wearing a hooded cover that looks like some of the equipment that the 87th Regiment (ski troops) wore.

EDIT: oh yeah, those are M-1 helmets as well. [:)]

rtrapasso -> RE: Name This AE...250 (3/8/2009 4:56:24 PM)

i am pretty sure this is Radar O'Reilly's cousin, although i am not sure if he is from the Iowan or Canadian side of the family: [:'(]

[image]local://upfiles/7543/50EBED1131DF41D3AAEAC2C179FBC00B.jpg[/image]

EDIT: it looks like some sort of arrow on the helmet, possibly a divisional marking (although i don't know what one).

rtrapasso -> RE: Name This AE...250 (3/8/2009 5:10:54 PM)

i'm back to the 187th Infantry Regiment - after checking out the "arrow" on Radar Cousin's helmet - here is the Regimental patch:

EDIT: ACK! that is from the 187th Regiment, not the 87th... [:o] [:o]

Here's the 87th Regiment insignia, btw...

2ndACR -> RE: Name This AE...250 (3/8/2009 6:48:34 PM)

This site shows the Kiska shoulder patch with the blade aimed dowmward.......which matches the dark top on all the shoulder patches.

http://www.angelfire.com/md2/patches/misc.html

I suck at embedding pics, so there is the link.

Of course, the insignia of the FSSF was a spearhead, although i thought i had read that it wasn't adopted until after Kiska... however, i don't see that reference at the moment... the helmet marking doesn't look quite the same, but still...

That could jsut be a cammo patch on Pvt. Oreilly's helmet. 3 others have cammo patterns.

Here is a picture of (one of the?) famous coffee-brewing dogs with US troops - notice the nets on the helmets for US troops here.
