A C 47 in Burma with Brit troops. Note the machine guns on each side.(From the LIFE archives).

"C-47's weren't all unarmed" - wasn't Puff the Magic Dragon a 20mm gatling gun equipped C-47?

They certainly weren't all unarmed...at least later on.

Nomad -> RE: They weren't all unarmed (3/8/2009 4:42:43 AM)

Puffs used 3 X 7.62mm mini guns. Probably the electrical 6000 RPM version. They carried about 20,000 rounds per mission.

I didn't know that they used .30 cals. I guess I always thought they went for the 20mm's. (I was still a kid in '68)
I must have been thinking of the later AC-130's

Good one Nomad

Does anyone else find themselves amused at the gunners wearing fleece lined leather jackets and shorts?

I would say one of the parasupplying planes. Certainly not the one flying over the Hump.

Yes not to mention the flying boots.

They are probably surfers. It could be 36 degrees out but they will never put on long paints. They will wear a sweatshirt with a hood but they will wear their board shorts and flip flops.

For these chaps I suspect it is hot when they land but the windblast through the window get cold after a bit.

My father tells stories of flying missions in New Guinea.  He would be bundled up like Nanook of the North and sweating like a pig by take off.  Then as they would climb out, the sweat would freeze on his face.

The Russians put turrets on some of their C-47s.

Very famous pic of the NZ ace Geoffrey Fisken in his flying garb.(The boots are standard RAF issue.)
Fisken flew Buffaloes in Malaysia.

First thing I noticed. Doesn't it defeat the purpose of wearing a warm jacket when you forget to put on your pants? lol
