While I am waiting for some kind soul to send me a copy of the rule book, I would like to ask fellow grognards about John Wayne.

1- Is it true he was booed by wounded veterans of Iwo Jima?
2- Is it true he applied for a WW2 deferrment because he was a single parent?

I have heard these things, but have found no way of checking it out. If the first is true, what an irony.

I don't know about the specific questions, but I do remember from a TV biography that he DID ask for a deferrment and that it was granted (i.e. he WAS a draft dodger).

A deferrment is quite a bit different than draft dodging. . .

So every man in college who got a student deferment was a draft dodger?

I found at http://www.jwplace.com/index.html a bio of the Duke written by Ronald Regan. Here is an excerpt.

"When war broke out, John Wayne tried to enlist but was rejected because of an old football injury to his shoulder, his age (34), and his status as a married father of four. He flew to Washington to plead that he be allowed to join the Navy but was turned down. So he poured himself into the war effort by making inspirational war films - among them The Fighting Seabees, Back to Bataan and They Were Expendable. To those back home and others around the world he became a symbol of the determined American fighting man.

Duke could not be kept from the front lines. In 1944 he spent three months touring forward positions in the Pacific theater. Appropriately, it was a wartime film, Sands of Iwo Jima which turned him into a superstar. Years after the war, when Emperor Hirohito of Japan visited the United States, he sought out John Wayne, paying tribute to the one who represented our nation's success in combat."

I'd say lots of rich white kids did not have to go to war because they were benefitting their country studying modern dance, jazz, and recreology.

Heinlein had it right; in a Democracy/Republic one may have the right to shirk public service, but to be a citizen with the right to influence the future course of one's society you must have a stake in it! Italy, Israel among others require service. Here in the the U.S. it's called for, again, but largely ignored. We'd best change our ways or we're going to find ourselves with our backs to the modern Vandals.

Any biography by Reagan is suspect anyway, I dont know how much he remembered about anything. John Wayne was a hypocrite. I dont think many soldiers who have been under fire glorify war. All Quiet on the Western Front and The THin Red Line are true stories. The portray war as it is..

If he wanted it that badly(military service) he could have served.Look at President's Bush& Kennedy. Both came from welth and power both put their *** on the line.
I remember hearing about the booing.Forget were.Wounded Marines from the 1st Marine division, comming back from Pelalo. They were watching a movie. Before the movie, some said we have a suprise for you,out steped the duke,Marines started booing.
A real piece of work, was Joe Dimaggio.Yankees had him stationed in New Jersey. He wanted the Yankees to pay his salary while he was in the Army.
Ted Williams was called twice.WW2 and Korea.
