fluid -> Those blasted bombers...Effective AAA how? (5/16/2002 10:40:02 PM)

Hi all fans!
Im playing Germany in WWII campaign, and after having pushed the russians around for a while, I decided to go west and face the british and american troops. In Sovjet I seldom lost men/equipment, but against the brits I was totally demolished! Using some 10-12 bombers, my Tigers were blown to pieces, and my men totally erradicated! What a shock! I had never faced bombers previously in the campaign, and my support flak were no match for the planes. So, I restarted and bought those heavy 88mm FLAK, thinking "now u bastards. Come'n get it!". Once again I was dissapointed! So, my 2 question is:

1) What is the most effective AA gun/tactic for the Germans? I feel that BIG guns should work; like the 88mmFLAK, but a smaller caliber would maybe fire more and often. So does anyone have any tips to defend against lethal bombers?

2) What plane is preferred against tanks? A bomber (250/500 kg) or some kind of MG (20mm?)

Of course, while I was devastated by these attacks, I'v become even more addicted of SPWaW (sight!)

Much regards
Jens, a soon-to-become proud owner of UV, and probably unemploied :)

i never had this big problems with brit/ ami troops when i have played the big campaign. started in 43 in North Afrika, trained my troops on the shermans and 44 gone to the Eastfront. a bigger challenge in my opinion cause of the amouth of tanks there.

to get the air units under control, you are right, only hugh guns dont make it. with them you give the enemy too much points to buy units. not good. buy 2-4 88s, 6-8 20mm and for each tank squad 2 aa gun vehicle. Ostwind is good when you get them. you should have no big problems now.
key to success in the campaign is to not give the enemy too much points too buy. think that the russians can buy a complete tank company (nearly...) for 1 Königstiger !!! and train on the poor shermans in North Afrika to get elite units. German Tanks are better at far range, try to keep the enemy away.

Jens
Do you know how to do a search on the forum. There are a couple of great posts that talk about AA. If you do not know how go to the newby subform. It is probably 3 months old now but I believe that M4 Jess did a test on the different AA guns for the different counties. He posted a list with his results. If is very good though somewhat limited. He did not do all AA guns. But it gives you a good idea on what to take and what not to take.
I do not use a lot of planes (I think that they unbalance a battle), but the best tank busters for the germans are the Stuka's that have the 50 mm machines guns and the rockets. The bombers with the 500kg bombs are best for killing lots of infantry.

Hope this helps. and welcome.

When I played the Germans in a WWII campaign, the allies got me once with masses of bombers, from then on anytime I faced the Americans, about half of my support points each battle went to buy 20mm quads, mobile if I was attacking, static if I wasn't.

Along with that, I converted some of my experianced vehicles to spaa, experiance is a real key in shooting down aircraft.

From then on I never lost another vehicle to airplanes and shot down up to 24 aircraft per battle.

I also kept my troops deployed at least 2 hexes apart until after the 3-4 turn when the ai would have blown its air assets.
thanks, John.

Try Czech 47mm AA gun, very effective. In an experimental senario 2 of these weapons shot down 5 aircraft in one turn! Not bad ay!

Because of the way that aircraft in SPWAW choose targets, putting some trucks near your valuable units will usually distract air attacks.
I'm currently playing the Russian Steel Campaign and I've had eight german air attacks hit nothing but wagons!!!!!
You might also consider using the preferences to limit the number of air sorties.
