Serious: '12 O'Clock High': The Robert Lansing reruns. I never much liked the actor who replaced him.

Comedy: McHale's Navy.

Yea, I've been watching reruns on one of the channels here. Then there was the Victory at Sea series.

Rat Patrol was a favorite when I was a kid.
I have fond memories of Combat, especially one episode when you saw the same stuntman get killed as both a G.I. AND a german. lol.

"Twelve O'Clock High"(with Robert Lansing,(my favorite too)..He was replaced by Paul Burke,a soap opera actor who was chosen to replace Lansing because he "looked" younger!!(This was actually admitted by the network,and reported in TV guide,an age before "political correctness and age discrimination"(which does exist and always will probably..):( The funny thing is,Paul Burke was older then Lansing by approx 3 yrs......)Series was dropped(with all "war" shows because Vietnam was already in our living rooms every day,for those long years..):( :( :(

Ooh, I must be too young (born in 66') to have seen shows like combat and 12 o'clock high. I've never heard of em.
The only ones that come to mind are Baa Baa Black Sheep and Tour of Duty.
BBBS started out good...then they started to forget to put combat in the episodes
Tour of Duty wasn't bad...how can you go wrong with a show whose theme song is Paint it Black:D
You'd think I would have seen more on Detroit TV. And Band of Brothers hasn't made it to Aussie cable TV yet.

Hogan's Heroes of course, after all it wasn't about accuracy, it was about fun.

If you want accuracy then you want Mash. Which in my opinion should not have to even share space in a category as it has no peers of it's calibre.
I laughed watching Mash and I cried watching Mash.
It was a show that will never be equaled.

Rat Patrol was a comic book on TV, fun but it was so obviously inaccurate.

Tour of Duty was the only thing on Vietnam I have ever enjoyed movies included. It never tried to be to much, and as a result it did so much more.
Well to be honest, I give my nod to Good Morning Vietnam as the only movie on Vietnam I am willing to praise for being more than just a movie.

Serious - I'd have to say "Combat", but I haven't seen it since '66 or so. Apparently my dad is hooked on it again (it's on digital cable in their area) Like most of the other '60s shows I enjoyed I would probably see it with different eyes today, though ...

Humour - "Private Schultz" - A BBC series from the early '80s that have never seen anywhere again. It was about a plot to flood England with counterfeit bank notes.

I always liked "Combat!" series but for a favorite would be the 1960 era - now would be the little known Polish series - Four Tankmen and a Dog.

Subtitles of course. It is dated but very well done. It is about a Tank crew of a T34 tank and their pet German Shepard dog in the Polish Brigade battling into Germany late in the War. Magnuszew, to Baltic Coast, to Berlin..etc..

It is like the old Combat! series except with a T34 Tank on the Russian front. It has some old Soviet style Propaganda it in hinting at friendly relations between USSR and Poland as well as hidden messages promoting Poland's independance such as the Poland Fighting sign used in the Warsaw Uprising in several brief clips. Note: The Polish Home Army in Warsaw was sponsered by the West. Stalin let the Germans destroy the Polish Home Army in Warsaw instead of coming to their aid due to its support from Churchill. etc..

I really liked 'The Gallant Men' which came out the same year as 'Combat' and was much more realistic---which is probably why it only lasted one season!

The 'Gallant Men' was about an infantry company---not an independant squad that was winning the war in Europe all by itself ('Combat'.) It had officers, a chain of command, casualties (other than German ;) ) and everything else.

I also enjoyed '12 O'Clock' High' and 'Rat Patrol' (which was probably even more unrealistic than 'Combat')

BTW: I also liked 'Combat'. :)

Hollywood takes Vietnam more seriously than any war I have seen them make movies about for some reason.

Movies Glorifying WW2 are a dime a dozen but there are few if any doing the same about Vietnam. WW2 as perceived by the public had enough glory as opposed to Vietnam (again I am talking from the publics perspective, not my own, I hold Vietnam vets in high honor). One would think Hollywood would try to glamorize Vietnam.

Anyway as far as good Vietnam movies go I like Apocalypse Now (one of the best movies ever, war or not) and Platoon.

i'm sorry but I don't think TV has ever and will ever treat the subject of war in an appropriate manner. Yes Combat came close and it was ahead of its time. It should be reproduced and updated. I never saw "Band of Brothers" . It probably came closest being by Spielberg.
