thegreatwent -> Error:Unable to find PW data!!! (3/25/2009 4:28:45 AM)

Just reloaded WitP on my new machine. Something that I have done before but for some reason I now have received this error at startup. Any ideas?

Sounds like you probably need to deinstall completely and then reinstall from scratch... [:(]

Did you try perhaps taking a shortcut and installing files from the old machine? Newer versions of WITP won't allow this (you have to do one complete install to a new machine first - then you can copy over files from an old machine to install mods, etc.)

I recently reinstalled, converted to AB's extended map and put in AB's pwhex file and got the same message on startup. I simply reinserted the pwhex file and it worked fine on the second try.

Interesting. I received the exact same error message. I created a folder on my desktop for my different WITP installations. However, when I copied the exe shortcuts into the folder I did just that, copied them instead of "create shortcut". So it was like trying to run the game but not knowing where the files are. I would say take a look and make sure you are using Shortcuts to the exe file and not the exe file itself.

Thanks I will give these fixes a try, it always worked before so the issue probably exists between keyboard and seat[;)]

Ok I deleted the previous install. Downloaded the v1904com.zip from Matrix and installed it. Then downloaded the v1806revamped.zip and loaded that. The short cut is pointed at "C:\Matrix Games\War In The Pacific\War in the Pacific.exe" which is where the game is and the Error:unable to find PW data!!! persists. Going to try removing and reinstalling again but this is puzzling.[&:]

Just checked the properties of the exe file and it lists the version as 1.8.0.0

The versions I downloaded are 1.8.0.4 and 1.8.0.6, could this be the issue? Is the exe file looking for the wrong version?

Don't think so... but try getting your basic installation to work correctly before installing any mods first.

So -- do a basic installation - check to see if it works.

Then - upgrade using the 1.804 comp. download - again, check to see if it works.

Then upgrade using the 1.806 revised download - check to see if it works.

Assuming this all goes ok - copy the files over to a new file folder and install your mods there (create a new shortcut)... this way you will have a basic install (that you can use to play or as a basis for a different mod at some other time) as well as your mod.

It also occurs to me that since this is a new computer, you might be installing WITP under VISTA... is this the case??

If so, be aware you pretty much have to install WITP to the default location (c:|Matrix Games\War In The Pacific\)... failure to do so might result in various problems, including one you are describing.

Sorry to be a pain Robert but unless I'm missing it the earliest version I can download is the 1.804 comprehensive patch from the Matrix site. I do not have any earlier versions to install. If that is the case where can I get a 1.0 or similar basic copy that I can patch from? I would swear this was never an issue in the past. I am on XP and John Tiller's Campaign series downloaded just fine only WitP seems to be off.

Er... i don't know how you ever got it to work in the past... the 1.804 is a patch to any prior version, but you need to have the prior version...

Originally, you should have downloaded a copy, and hopefully ordered a CD copy... if no CD copy, you should hopefully have a copy of your original download.

Failing this, you can get a utility to move the old install over to your new machine, or you can try redownloading WITP.

This last is something of a pain if it has been over 1 year. You need to get up with Matrix with your order number and/or credit card.

rtrapasso -> RE: Error:Unable to find PW data!!! (3/27/2009 1:32:07 AM)

It occurs to me that perhaps if you bought the game in the last couple of years, your ORIGINAL version of the game was 1.804... in which case you just need to install with your ORIGINAL download file (not the comp patch) and then patch to 1.806.

If you are missing your original install copy, you need to redownload as above.

Robert, a million thanks. The original download backup was on my old hard drive and I was trying to load the program with just the patch. Problem solved, once again you are a credit to this forum and its inmates err... participants.[:)]
