19400724 : We expand out of Gibaltar a bit, but bring no new troops in.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/5/2009 6:24:38 AM)

19400801 : The British abandon, evacuate, Marseilles, and when the Axis moves in next turn it will mark the end of the Third Republic. The Italians have left Tobruk, and the LRDG troops are nearly to Tripoli, which should mean the Axis will have to use Tunis to re-enter the continent. Malta is well garrisoned as is Gibraltar, but Germans have already been sighted near the "Rock" and we are sure that Franco and his Feldgrau friends will give Gibraltar much attention. The French Fleet will disappear next turn, and the Royal navy will have to be on guard.

Where will Axis attention turn next? The Soviets show no sign of any activity, and their garrisons near the border appear in normal state. They have a non aggression pact with Germany, and appear to be depending on it. All eyes are on the German leadership to guage their next move. Is Great Britain ready for an invasion?

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/5/2009 11:02:54 PM)

19400816 : The Germans declared war on the Yugoslavs, and served them breakfast in bed! We see many Germans before Gibraltar, but so far only infantry. No Spanish to be seen which makes Portugal nervous.

Chocolino -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/5/2009 11:27:07 PM)

This may be yet another reason in favor of gaining the "traditional" Axis minors: You can attack Belgrade from the back (i.e. north east) via Hungary in turn one of the campaign and don't have to fight your way south through Yugoslavia. (I assume that is what happened here). Split remains however as a VP.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/5/2009 11:40:23 PM)

Thank heavens for Split or I would have "F1"ed in to find Yugoslavia already defeated. JJ is pushing ahead here and in Spain at the same time. I have five strong British infantry corps in, and before Gibraltar and he may need panzers there before any Greek or Turkish adventures.

I sortied the Yugoslav fleet, and hope to slow this jugernaut a bit. Next turn the French Navy will no longer exist, and I am interested if JJ will do anything naval.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/6/2009 1:32:06 AM)

19400901 : The British rush in to fill the vacuum after the Fall of France, and the Germans advance on Split and Gibraltar.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/6/2009 3:29:20 AM)

19400916 : In Yugoslavia we are nearly wiped out. The Yugoslavs have moved PP by convoy to Greece, another neutral. By house rule they could not ship to beligerent Great Britain.

19401001 : Yugoslavia falls.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/6/2009 1:33:16 PM)

19401016 : This is a quiet turn as we wait to see what direction the Axis will go. Will they attack neutral Portugal? What of Greece?

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/6/2009 2:52:38 PM)

19401101 : The Axis, primarily Spanish troops we believe, have invaded Portugal. Lisbon fell before we could react which implies that German help must have been used too. We expected this move, as a neutral Portugal on the flank of Axis Spain invites the Allies. However we had not exerted any diplomatic pressure on Portugal and this would have allowed the Axis a brief period before they had to invade. This may imply a desire on the German part to be done with the Iberian peninsula. They may have other fish to fry. There is no sign of any German activity on the Soviet border and all looks quiet on both sides. We hope England and Scotland are well enough defended that the Germans look elsewhere, and perhaps they are looking East. Conventional wisdom holds that the Germans have a hard row to hoe in Russia, but these Germans have an abundance of PP each turn, and they may be thinking of trying the Red Army. 1941 is coming fast and this will be a big decision for the German Staff.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/6/2009 10:00:31 PM)

19401201 : The end of 1940. This was a mixed year for us. The loss of France, the Benelux countries, Portugal, and Yugoslavia is offset in part by the holding of nearly all of North Africa. This would be even better if we held Gibraltar, but we do not. The Royal Navy now faces the navies of Italy, Germany, and Spain, which is daunting. The Norweigians have expressed a strong willingness to join the forces of freedom, and have invited the staffs of Great Britain to Oslo to meet and discuss joint defense issues. Rumor has it that representatives from the USA have joined in some discussions there. Rumor also places Icelandic representatives there too.

Will the next year bring an eastern focus to Axis interests?

gwgardner -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/6/2009 10:40:36 PM)

What are the advantages to bring in Iceland?

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/6/2009 10:52:43 PM)

One victory point, and infantry. The Americans can ship PP to Iceland when they both are neutral, and then when it enters these can be useful. I have four such divisions in Portugal-Spain in TriplePlay. In this game I am not shipping PP there, but the VP is handy, and they do slowly build units. France used her DP to bring her 2/3 of the way in, and once I get Norway in, I will go for the other third. It is a cheap VP at 15 DP per influence shot.

Also you can prevent the Axis from taking it with an amphibious assault as I did in SuD. That VP is just as valuable as any other 1 VP city.

Chuck

gwgardner -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/7/2009 12:10:46 AM)

But other than conquests, what is the use of VPs?

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/7/2009 12:47:06 AM)

You count them up to see who wins. Admittedly I have never seen a game go long enough to do that, but it is the official way to "Victory" at the end of the "Road".

Chuck

PS : At historical war's end in SuD, the Axis still had enough to win, but somebody has modified that situation a bit.

I think we can count SuD II a win for you on any count.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/7/2009 3:44:08 AM)

19410101 : Happy new year. The British in North Africa are still running about capturing ex-French cities. Here is a look at Great Britain.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/7/2009 3:49:04 AM)

On winning and losing : Everyone who plays this game in PBEM is a winner because we all get so much from it, but I am losing SuD, and I wanted to win it, and thought I was going to, but I am not. The reason I am not is because Gary Gardner correctly analysed the Le Havre vulnerability, and exploited this insight very well, too well for me to come back. If I had played better I think I would have won, but Gary Gardner is going to win, deservedly : take it from me!

Chuck

gwgardner -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/7/2009 2:16:39 PM)

Hmmh, I actually harbored the sneaking suspicion that you deliberately left that 2-4 Italian division east of Le Havre so I'd have a chance!

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/7/2009 6:55:34 PM)

19410201 : Woosh, the sound of Greek independence disappearing. Was it a paradrop, or an amphibious assault? This is a Axis command that does not fool around.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/8/2009 12:26:42 AM)

19410216 : Not much to be seen. We wonder where the next show will drop. The neutrals must be under considerable influence from the beligerents before they take advice, and this is one of the reasons why the Greeks dropped so quickly. We are concerned that Turkey may suffer the same fate, but until we have 50%+ diplomatic influence we cannot send advisers. In previous wargaming of this conflict we did not use this rule, and it is very hampering to the Allies.

We have taken all but one of the cities in the ex-French colonies.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/8/2009 6:20:19 PM)

19410301 - 19400316 : Again, not much to be seen. The British are driving on Casablanca. Ships are sailing about the sea. Everyone is waiting on the next move of the Fascists.

Romania is considering entering the war.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/9/2009 2:37:50 AM)

19410401 : Massive Axis forces on the Soviet border. The British take Tangiers.

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/9/2009 7:47:33 PM)

19410416 : Barbarossa! A bit early, but we rather expected that. The Germans came at us in the north, but once Romania comes in we expect action in the south too. The Soviets present the Germans with a broad band of infantry, easy pickings for L3 Panzers, but there are a lot of them.

19410501 : I forgot to get a snap after moving my Soviets so here is one after the Axis move :

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/10/2009 4:12:28 AM)

19410509 : Bloodied, we pull back. The British are gallantly fighting convoys through to the Soviets and taking losses.

19410601 : Really June now. I guess I just want winter really bad!

cpdeyoung -> RE: Half Again : Allied perspective (4/12/2009 2:48:44 PM)

19410609 : This was a scrambling turn, with no real chance to do any building for the future. We are being presed hard across the bard, and had to build infantry to hold vital cities. Each turn we look for some opportunity to cut units off and damage them, but never find one. We are
having to use Guards Tank Corps to hold cities when we would rather position them to threaten his lines of communication. The British are sending us convoys in the 150PP range of which we generally receive over 140PP. American Lend Lease is anothe 50PP, with no interception. We are spending 370PP per turn.
