"but to this day, I haven't been let down by Steam or Valve."

Yup, me too. Never had a problem. I have an old Steam account from when Half Life 2 was released, years ago. Haven't used it in years untill a few days ago when I reinstalled HL2 again (Orange Box), and hey presto, log in without problems.
So no problems here with Valve.

Bethesda on the other hand.... [:@] The problems I have/had with FAll OUT 3... too horrible to describe. And not just me, countless very disgruntled users flock their forum, many unable to play the game at all. What's the response from Bethesda?? Nothing, absolute silence. So needless to say their forum is swamped with ppl looking for a solution, some get an answer from forum members, most don't. And what does Bethesda do? Release DLC's (Downloadable Content) to make more money... instead of making it possbile for a lot of folks to get the game running in the first place. Now that really p&*ses them off. [:@]

Some people have had problems with Steam, and I understand that. I certainly understand the "once bitten twice shy" view...I am exactly the same, but to this day, I haven't been let down by Steam or Valve.

Bought Empire: Total War, retail CD, not realising it needs Steam. Wasn't too bothered as I have other Steam games but then Steam complains that its a duplicate CD key, ie someone has already nicked it. Now I have to email them digital photos of the manual on the digicam I don't have or thats £50 down the drain.

I'm sure the situation will be rectified - but sorry, not interested in hassle like this due to ridiculous and ineffectual copy protection. Bitten once, never again.

Also the time I tend to play single player games is when my internet connection is down, so any Steam phone-homing ruling out offline play means its essentially useless for me. I've not bought any Steam games for years, it looks like things have tightened up significantly there without my knowing about it. Well, now I know.

Have you looked for cracks yet? Or family member or friend who has camera or scanner?

If lawyer comes to sue you, just slap him around with game box & manual. Best if you keep receipt and any e-mails from tech support.

Jeffrey, well now there are 2 STALKER games.

1) STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl (the fist, which I played)
2) SALKER Clear Sky (I haven't played this one: a sequel)

It's obviously a FPS. What makes it amazing (in my opinon -- and keep in my mind that before STALKER I did play Doom 3: absolutely linear, the monsters will ALWAYS be on the same spot [:(] The old Doom 2 on the other hand allowed you to explore the levels) is that you are FREE to go wherever you want. Literally. You are NOT forced to follow a particular story line either. You can ignore many missions at will too.

Second: I'm sort of tired of the satanic, science-fiction scenarios [Doom 3] [8D] In STALKER you are in a real, prosaic world (Chernobyl region). And believe me, the atmosphere is simply amazing. You have woods, villages, factories, roads, bunkers, cities, mlitary installations, etc.

Then the AI (or the bad guys if you prefer). All of them are "animated". How to explain it? The programmers didn't say "ok, here there will always be x zombie / bandit / etc.; and he will always react as predicted". NO! Just like you, they MOVE AROUND!

One more thing: forget massacres, killing sprees à la Doom. If you attack 5 bandits you will probably die... You are NOT invulnerable (realism, that is). You still can atack them but you better have better weapons than them, a good armor and medikits... And take cover as well. Banzai charges are a suicide (as it should be) [:D]

It's basically er, a realist FPS (with an amazing atmosphere, scenario).

P.S.: possibly a bug (because he doesn't notice they guy in front of him), but here you are a zombi yelling "hurrah" (all the personages speak in Russian, or Ukranian I guess, which makes the whole thing even funnier) [:D]

Ok, I took a look at that video, and many others on YT. Funny thing is, I got bored watching them after about 15 minutes. The game looks like TFC to me. Don't take it personally, but it's nothing too interesting to me.

I was intrigued by the concept of a dynamic environment that is not the same way twice, without linear scripting. I think that is a very good advance in FPS games and has been long overdue. I remember when MOH-AA came out and I kept harping on how limited and linear it was and how it could be something completely different if a degree of openness and randomness was added. I seem to recall reading that some sort of dynamic environment was eventually included in some sequel of the original but that was years after I stopped caring.

I watched a video of a guy with an AR type rifle get into a fight with a pack of dogs, the guy went though like 10 magazines on the AR and another 2 or 3 on the pistol and still got eaten by a pack of around 10 dogs. Now that's just plain silly.

And another video I watched a guy fight a zombie pack of around 20 to 30 zeds using his AR, shotgun, pistol and scoped high powered rifle. Realism ? If that's what they think is realism, they need to try harder.

Doom 3 was then end of the road for FPS games for me. Until something really new or different comes along, I'm done with them. I feel like the thrill of them now won't live beyond the time it takes me to pay off the CC company for the purchase.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: FEAR 2 (4/2/2009 1:07:04 AM)

Jeffrey, the 20 or 30 zombies are only seen in a mod (NOT armed by the way, so they are cattle. In fact I would say that mod is for having some laughs). In the normal game the zombies are quite dangerous [:)] They have weapons and fire them.

To me the non-linear stuff is a must now. I just hate the bloody corridors => forward, always forward [;)]

Having problems with 5 dogs is plausible (in real world that is; but we have to accept that the Rambo thing is just plainly ridiculous: one bullet = one dead).

Just remember the last scene in Unforgiven when Eastwood quietly walks into the crowded Greeley's Saloon... Many armed men but can they really use their weapons? Possibly the best shooting scene I have ever seen on cinema.

In any case, if I have to choose between massive, continous killing sprees and the 5 "mighty" dogs, I choose the latter. That's what STALKER perfectly delivers. The taste of "reality". Or if you prefer, finally a game in which you are NOT invulnerable, a god. In Doom 2 or 3 I see 20 enemies and simply say "no problem". Ten seconds later I surpassed Charles Manson...

To each his own taste [:)]

JudgeDredd -> RE: FEAR 2 (4/2/2009 7:34:19 AM)

I could never get on with Stalker. I installed and uninstalled so many times...I liked the concept, but I get bored with role playing games.

What you want Jeffrey is "Left4Dead": http://www.l4d.com/home.php
Four multiplayer co-op, against the zombie hordes. Or singleplayer with three bots, but rest assured, Valve is involved in this one too, so the AI *should* be awesome.

Didn't tell anyone that smoking kills?

Ooohhh Josuatree, that was a good call. I spent about 8 or 10 straight hours playing this with 4 others in coop mode last night/this morning. Very very good. I want to go for another 10 hour session right away but I prolly should sleep some.....

JudgeDredd -> RE: FEAR 2 (6/29/2009 7:25:05 AM)

Yes, it's quite addictive. Especially playing the game with other sensible people.

The Witch sends a chill up my spine!

Just downloaded the demo, and this game has to be one of the creapiest, scariest, actionridden games I've played in years!
Really, the graphics, the special effects, but mostly the sound effects... man oh man, this one *really* gives me the creeps. For those of you who don't know this game, it's a First Person shooter, a bit like Half Life (-2) but much, much more bloodier and much more gore.
The graphics are absolutely stunning on my 4870X2 at 1900X1200 and everything maxed out, the sound effects are ... too damn scary for my heart [:D], the cut-scenes are brilliant... and also damn scary too. In scary situations lights start to flicker, spooky effects occur, things start moving and flying through the air... and ofcourse... it's dark. But hey, you have a flashlight! Only this one starts to fail on some occasions... especially when you *REALLY* want to see what the heck is going on.
And then there are the sound effects, gosh, when your game character "feels" frightened he starts to breathe heavilly, which has the effect that *you* become uneasy too.
Besides, the game played fluently, must be the Valve guys who are resposible for this. I mean, played Fall Out 3 and Crysis recently too, both had many bugs and glitches. Not so Fear2.
Like I said, very much recommended if you want a good shooter, but you defenitely do not want your kid or young nephew to play this one. They probably will have nightmares afterwards. [:D] Heck, even I don't want to play this one in the dark with headphones on.... way too scary.

So if you want a break from the usual counter moving, hard core war games, this is one for you.

Yeah the demo is a bit short, but worth downloading anyway.

Titanwarrior89 -> RE: FEAR 2 (6/30/2009 2:51:33 AM)

Hahahaha[:D] I had to laugh at the one.

My most memorable moment from FEAR was sneaking down a corridor in ArmaCham HQ, past a conference room, when a corpse gets thrown through the glass wall into the corridor in front of me. I think my heart rate snapped to 200 in about a microsecond...[X(]

Yes, those offices had quite a few moments like that!

I also remember one scene where I had to climb down some ladders to a level below. As my view of the platform above me was just about to disappear, a figure appeared and walked right in front of me (iirc). I had to switch the game off for the night as I was practically swimming in adrenaline! There are so many things in that game designed to play with your mind and scare the player, it's amazing really. Some of the blood filled corridors are quite disturbing.

As I always play at night and with headphones, I had to tell my wife not to tap me on the shoulder to get my attention! My heart was in my mouth many a time from her doing that. [X(]
