Hey Judge..wasn't sure if I should link an ebay page....anyway, I think this seller will end up losing quite a bit of money when all is said and done....some people will not bid because all of the original boxes are not part of the collection and when you consider how much he paid to get the rule books either leather or spiral bound, and the laminating of maps, he spent quite a bit out of pocket besides the cost of the games...

Let me correct a few things:

Curt Schilling, an American Baseball player (Pitcher of superstar caliber) an avid history buff and board wargamer is a part owner of MMP (Multi-Man Publishing, board wargame publisher), he helped them out when they needed financial help and IIRC help MMP acquire the rights to ASL.
Mr Schilling also owns 38 Studios, a designer of PC games (#38 was Schillings uniform number).

MMP has the rights to the ASL (Advanced Squad Leader) series. To say ASL is similiar to WiTP is a gross understatement, WiTp has probably sold in the low thousand of copies while ASL has sold near millions. ASL has been around since the 70's, a PC version of ASL is the holy grail of board/PC wargaming.
Many PC games have tried to emulate ASL, for example Close Combat, Combat Mission, and othe tactical WW2 combat games.(although the designers deny it now)

VASSAL is a PC based Java application that allows players to play board wargames with each other, a sort of computerized Play By EMail for board wargames. There is no AI or rules within the module, players move all units/game pieces, keep track of stats and must know/own the rules.
Other similiar systems are Cyberbox and ZunTzu.
Usually "modules" for VASSAL are created by a 3rd party/players and not by the game company. Most game companies fully support module creation however because it helps with sales, many players do not have time/table space to play board wargames face-to-face so they use VASSAL instead.

Recently MMP announced that they would no longer be supporting VASSAL for their games. Of course there was a outcry from diehard loyal fans, most play only via VASSAL. The next day MMP backed off saying they would have an annoucement on future online availability later.

Because of Schillings recent retirement from Baseball there is speculation that MMP is partnering with 38 Studios to "port" MMP's extensive line of board wargames to the PC. And that the games will include computerized rules implementation and possible AI.

Please note that MMP doesn't own rights to electronic version of ASL...as of now...and 38 Sutudios didn't make any kind of announcement about electronic version of ASL.

Never used Vassal. They have Memoir '44 but unfortunately, no Conflict of Heroes which is my favourite of the two I own. CoH is good, but there are limitations to single player (no hidden mines, no pre-spotted arty etc)...good game though although short on scenarios. I don't suppose it would be a problem making one up though.

I've made a ZunTzu gamebox for CoH that will allow you to play it online with others (no pbem support at the moment). Google Zuntzu and you'll find it.

I could buy two new computers with that kind of money or at least one really great one with the best video card made and a 10k speed hard drive 1terabyte. Never understood people payin that kind of money for a game. No game is worth that kind of money. Even for collecting.

Well to be fair, that collection is not only "one game" it is a lot of modules and base games. And as it looks in prestige condition.

Hanal -> RE: What is your take on the MMP-Curt Schilling-38 Studios-Vassel Controversy? (4/3/2009 1:15:11 PM)

The collection is selling for $2100.00 right now...

If you've got the money and ASL is your thing then its a great collection...... or you could put the money in the bank and earn lots of interest.... [&:]

Judge,
Some guy just posted a new Vassal module for Conflict of Heroes. The screen shot looks promising but I have no idea how good the module is as I've never played the game. You might try Vassal. It's a good way to play games solo and without having to set up "real" components. If you do decide to try it and have any problems they have excellent support people on their forums. Or you could ask me through this forum.

Here's a link to the CoH module:

http://vassalengine.org/community/index.php?option=com_vassal_modules&task=displayAll&Itemid=30

Use the second entry. The author of the module posted two messages. And of course you will have to install Vassal to run the module.

If you know where to look you can get 5.26% interest on a thing called reward checking accounts. I found one and all I have to do is make 10 purchases on my debit card a month (pretty easy to do) and accept online statements. Don't even have to have a direct deposit or anything else. Of course if the stock market is coming out of its slump then jumping on the investment wagon is the way to go if you don't have scared money. I'm throwing a few dollars into that and have made a couple of grand already. If you're going to invest in the SM I suggest looking for low cost high dividend paying stocks like General Electric.

Just to cap off one part of this thread, the ASL Ebay final bid was $2500.00, add to that another $150 for shipping and someone is good to go....[:)]

Veldor -> RE: What is your take on the MMP-Curt Schilling-38 Studios-Vassel Controversy? (4/6/2009 11:00:14 PM)

The seller wasn't nearly descriptive enough to me for such a large lot. Has me wondering if the buyer even realizes that almost NO boxes are included. Call me OCD but if I pay $2500 for a collectible I want the original boxes...

Looks to be a pretty hard collection to resell either way as outside of the booklets its all massively mixed together.

In the past I've bought huge collections on Ebay just to split them up (and enjoy them for the brief time in between). Almost always netted me a nice profit but then again at the time I knew values very well and how best to present stuff. To me, though it seems like boardgaming is actually growing, I think the value of most of the classic stuff has really plummeted.

Now the real massive amounts are going to stuff only originally in print less than 5 years ago. Something about really small print runs or whatever...
