Anybody here play Band of Heroes and/or the expansions on VASSAL?

I've never done it and would like to give it a try. Either live or PBEM... though I have no idea how it works PBEM....

I'm in EDT, GMT-5.

Hopefully I'll be receiving Band of Heroes soon (they've begun charging for the 2nd edition). I'll give you a shout once I've had a chance to go through the rules.

I've also just started playing Combat Commander on-line and am also working through Conflict of Heroes - lot's of good squad boardgames!

Just a note that I'm also GMT-5 (Kitchener, Ontario actually so sort of in the same neck of the woods!)

Best wishes,

Doug

Cool guys thanks for chiming in. We can all learn it at the same time. Let me know when you're ready to give it a try.

BoH v2 should look really cool, I just can't justify buying a second copy.. or afford it with all the expansions I'm buying...[:'(]

I'll keep an eye out for more people.

Really looking forwards to giving the system a spin. I have to say that I was astounded upon getting back into board wargaming to find the sheer number and variety of games. Combine Vassal and skype and it really does go along way to addressing the lack of face to face opportunities that was the reason I got out of the hobby in the first place and turned to the PC.

Best wishes,

Doug

Ive played email games before, but BOH to me is to interactive for it, I take it vassel since its a Java site , is also geared for sit down?

Barthheart -> RE: BoH on Vassal (4/6/2009 5:32:54 PM)

Yep. With Vassal you can use Skype, or similar comm software, and like dougb said be almost like you're across the board from someone.

For PBEM I kind of pictured it taking a lot of emails - you move one unit it's full movment then send the file to me to see if I want to opportunity shoot at it. If not then I move my unit.. etc. I've never tried it so I don't know what works best.

Live play ove the net would be interesting too but setting aside the time is the biggest problem. Altough I think you can save a live session in the middle and start it up again later...

You guys have only 2 posts each... are you new to Matrix or just now un-lurking? (is that a word...)

dougb -> RE: BoH on Vassal (4/6/2009 5:49:01 PM)

I've been lurking around for quite some time now. In the past I've mainly posted on a sports video gaming board (some of the members there also play wargames) and have just recently started posting at Wargamer in the Schwerpunkt games section.

Best wishes,

Doug

Hi Guys,

So I've got a PBEM game of BoH going with VASSAL. Works pretty smoothly.... especially since the guy I'm playing knows what what and we've been sending moves every day.

Play goes something like this: Say scenario is Person 1 sets up 1st, Person 2 moves first.
Person 1 sets up the scenario boards and if he's first to setup does so. Can also roll for init. if needed. Send files to Person 2.
2 then sets up his forces and rolls for init if needed. Start a log file, this records your moves. Move first unit(s) as first impulse. Do the full move. End log file and send to 1.
1 Loads save game (logfile he recieved) and steps through the log. If he wants to Op fire he stops the log, ends the log and starts a new log file. Spell out the attack and roll for both parties, record results, end long file and send to 2.

Lather, rince and repeat.

Pretty simple. You can type notes tot he other player in the log file or the email you send with the log file.

Pretty smooth but does take a while to play a scenario. W're playng Brothers in Arms scenario and just started turn 2 of 7 after about 12 days of play. More turns per day would go faster. But I'm still hanging on my seat waiting teh his logfile to show up to see whats happening. Great fun.

Anyone want to give it a shot?

I'm still awaiting my BOH order - hopefully I'll be getting it soon.

I haven't played PBEM on Vassal in my Combat Commander Games. I'm really enjoying the virutal face to face and interaction that comes from being able to send messages back and forth in realtime. It can be tricky to arrange suitable game times but when I do get the opportunity I really think it is the best way - particularly with the squad level games.

I'm looking forward to getting a game going with you when my copy eventually shows up - I did get the British expansion in the mail several weeks ago LOL!

Best wishes,

Doug

Cool.

I've got all the expansions and am just wating on Heroes of the Blitzkrieg. The Noville expansion is by far the best so far in terms of production value and scenario balance.

Have you played the print and play demo of BoH? We could always give that a go on VASSAL.....
