Sinjen -> Questions about US CVE and AV Class Ships (5/21/2002 2:59:51 PM)

In my current PBEM game as the Americans I received the CVE Long Island which by its stats carries 16 planes, but it came from pearl with no attached squadrons. Is this because it is used to ferry planes??? Can I transfer the land based wildcats and dauntless to it and have them fly off it while under way like a regular fleet carrier since it did not come with an attached carrier wing?

I have like 5 AV's. They seem quiet worthless. Other than having a high Endurance, what good are they? They can't carry float planes which is what I thought they were for and they have no cargo capacity. They have no A\C capacity so I can't even transfer floats from cruisers to them. THey don't come with a float squadron on them and the american's don't seem to get any independant float squadrons even if they could carry them.

Just wondering if the AV's are bugged or I am missing something.

The AV provide aviation support for seaplanes. Just send them to off to some quiet beach somewhere (must have a dot of your colour), ship in some supplies by transport

et volia! A Seaplane base

If you send your seaplanes (e.g. Catalinas) to this beach, you will find they have aviation support provided by the AV and they can use the supplies you dumped on the beach.

Thank you very much for the info on american AV's. Any know why the CVE Long Island didn't come with any planes on board?

Because it was used to ferry planes and did not have its own air group if I am not mistaken.

Ron Saueracker -> CVE Long Island (5/21/2002 5:30:15 PM)

Long Island was the USN's first escort carrier and had a small aircraft capacity compared to later variants. Due to this and other limitations, she was utilized as an aircraft auxilliary, ferrying aircraft and such. Historically, she shipped the first Marine airgroups to Guadalcanal on 20 August 1942.

Beware!! Apparently there might be a bug or two on board this ship; at the very least some Japanese saboteurs. Look in the bug thread, I believe.....people are saying that planes disappear from the game when transferred onto LI!!!:eek:

U2 -> Hi Ron (5/21/2002 5:35:00 PM)

Hi!

I hope you get the game today Ron. Learn quickly so that I can crush you in a PBEM.:D

Ron Saueracker -> Being crushed by a swede (5/21/2002 5:45:46 PM)

The Swedes are not known for their ability to "crush" opposing players. Just ask Don Cherry! :p

I hope it comes today, too. I don't want to fall so far behind that I get a bare bum spanking at the hands of every PBEM opponent. Seems like there is much to learn.

UPS says it still can't track my order. U(niteded) P(arcel) S(ucks)!!!:mad:

If Fed Ex and UPS ever merge, they should call it Fed UP. :D

vils -> CVL Long Island (5/21/2002 8:43:27 PM)

CVL Long Island, this beutiful little ship got lost in it's initial engagement.

I sent it to Port Moresby supporting an transport TF and right away it got bombhits and sunk. I bet the crew got surprised..

madflava13 -> (5/21/2002 8:46:38 PM)

With the AVs, do you have to "Dock" the TF or disband it to get that support?

The U.S.S. Long Island initially carried a small composite airgroup named VS-201. It consisted of up to 12 SBD Scout Bombers, some observation planes and occasionally a "Few" fighters. 3 or 4 F2A or (later) F4F. The group size varied. It's initial complement (just before the war) was 6 SBC Bi-plane Scout Bombers and 10 SOC float/observation Planes so it's official complement is usually given as 16 aircraft. There were 20 on board during the battle of Midway.

When in use as an aircraft ferry to Guadalcanal (August, 1942) most of it's aircraft were landed and some stored in the small hanger. "Several" SBD were used as ASW patrol on the return trip.

vils -> Historical curiosa (5/22/2002 1:15:19 PM)

What's was her fate?

Did she see any battle?

No she did not. During the Midway battle Long Island operated in support of the old Battleship force out of San Francisco. Other than that (and her one trip to Guadalcanal) she spent the war as a training carrier and aircraft ferry. She survived the war undamaged.

It'll dock on its own when it gets to its destination. It works just fine that way. I've never tried disbanding on a non-port. Now hat I think about it, I'm not sure I want to. The TF might end up in a different galaxy or somefink. :p

Ron Saueracker -> Long Island's fate. (5/22/2002 3:33:57 PM)

LI was withdrawn from USN service in 1946 and was converted back into a mercantile hull, serving as the Nelly fro 1949 to 1953. She was resold in 1953 and was renamed Seven Seas and served until hulked in 1966 and subsequently broken up.;)

So they do, do something.

Mind you I'd be very cautious about using them. I used to use them in Carriers at War but only as a lure for enemy TF's.

The problem is that to have any point they have to be positioned in some isloted spot not already covered by your air search umbrella and that makes them sitting ducks for any IJN TF with nothing better to do.

So I used to set them up somewhere and wait for a jap TF to spot them and close for the kill, not realising of course that my own Carriers were tucked in behind it just within effective strike range.

Normally worked though it was usually bad news for the crew on the AV.
I've never tried disbanding on a non-port.
You can't. You can only disband TF's in ports of size 3 or larger.
