von Murrin -> Your best/worst/most unique engagement. (5/22/2002 11:13:01 AM)

Since there's so many serious threads, I thought we needed a fun one. So step right up an' tell us all how ya pounded 'em. :p

My best (and worst).

Playing as Allies in Scen. 17. 07/13-17/42 Japanese own Buna and GG, and I own PM, where all the action takes place.

The Japanese made a medium-sized thrust towards Lunga (which had been left alone 'til now), and promptly smashed into PM after successfully convincing me the objective was Lunga. Three bombardments later, I got a surface TF into PM on the 13th. It turned out they were just in time for the next round. I had 4CA, 4CL, 6DD. The IJN had 4CA, 2CL, and 8DD. I took moderate damage to 2 CA. The Japanese lost 1CA, 1CL, and 1DD.

So far so good. Well...
On the 14th, I got hit by an identical force. No, they were actually different ships. :p The Japanese lose 1CL, and 2DD. I lose 1DD, and moderate to 1 more CA, and same to 2CL's.

The 15th.
They're baaack. :D
It's the first TF this time, minus 1 more CA. I sink 2 DD's and finally lose a CA. My TF is looking pretty beat up right now, but not to worry. My 3CV's are almost there, and another SC TF is heading in for the relief.

The 16th.
IJN TF No. 2 comes back and pounds me. I lose 1CL, and 2DD, convincing the IJN to leave with no immediate losses.
Round 2.
Yup, Same night. The IJN is back with 2BB and 1CL. These guys just don't know when to quit. I lose a CA and a DD. Both BB's seem to have taken some damage. Stay away, mmmmm k? :p

The 17th.
The sun comes out for the first time in a week (actual clear weather). My air searches reveal a line of damaged IJN property that starts 2 hexes out of Moresby, and runs all the way up to 3 hexes past Gili, all making for Rabaul. :eek: My CV's are here, so between them and Moresby, I have over 350 bombers at my disposal. I spend the morning making steel swiss cheese... :D The end of this little mini-campaign comes when a late afternoon strike from a 4CV IJN TF hits my CV's. I was worried about that, so my CAP was at 70%. 46 Vals and 23 Kates are caught by 93 F4's. Not one even made it in for an attack run. I lost no planes. :D No further strikes, and I retire to PM and its 100 fighter CAP.

I thought this deserved posting because at no time did I ever think I would win any of the individual engagements, but everything went my way!

So... what's your best story? :)

von Murrin -> The follow-up. (5/22/2002 2:28:33 PM)

Well the Japs came back, and my combined TF was given the royal smackdown by a 4BB TF. I lost 3CA, 1CL, and 3DD. *Sigh*

There were also something like 6CV's and 3CVL's waiting for my CV TF, so now it needs an entirely new complement of aircraft. There's nothing like gleefully sending out a 120+ aircraft strike and watching it melt under the guns of a slightly larger CAP. :(

So... best battle followed by worst. :p

Ron Saueracker -> Her name was Monique. (5/22/2002 3:47:14 PM)

Darn Acadian nurses. We were engaged while I was finishing university and she was a fully trained nurse. She came home oneday with a pamphlet on "Nurses Wanted to Work in Good Ol' USofA." $75,000USD a year (1992) for 9 months work, 3 months paid vacation, housing and meals paid for. Location: every three months a new hospital (she hit Honolulu, New Orleans, Virginia Beach). She was outta there pretty quick. Lol. Maritime girls are a lot like the girls in Pensacola in the movie "An Officer and a Gentleman." Show 'em you have at least fifty bucks in your wallet and they think you are rich and can take them out of the squalor. Uncle Sam had a few more bucks than me then, I guess...:rolleyes:

Oh, you meant military engagement!:eek: :D

Rob Roberson -> That old AI (5/22/2002 4:30:43 PM)

I still think my best/worst engagement was watching 3 torpedo bombers take off from what was left of the airfield at Gili Gili, be completely missed by my CAP and put two torpedos into Enterprise 1 day after she arrived on station. I was feeling pretty smug at the time (despite my earlier carrier woes) and I was literally screaming at the computer NOooo when I realized my CAP was off chasing nurses or something. It was one of those stunning blows. It was my worst moment in game to date. And best. (Though I did cheer when Gili fell to the marines after all the sacrifice I made...much to my wife's amusement.)

Odin -> Please explain me the 100 Fighter CAP (5/22/2002 5:19:59 PM)

How can you have such good fighter cover?

The best i had was nearly 40, and this number went down from day to day.

Same story with the bomber groups.

i never have more than a few bombers available.

Not having the game, I can only venture a guess.

You should be able to control the mix of aircraft to some extent, and the missions. If your pilots are disobeying your commands, perhaps they are fatigued. Do you rest them? Others have posted about the perils of prolonged combat duty. They settle for lower combat missions and preparedness due to their perceived danger and the weather conditions.

madflava13 -> (5/22/2002 8:31:44 PM)

I just lost Lady Lex and took severe damage to Yorktown in an engagement just south of Gili Gili... It was an instance where my strikes couldn't get off because of weather, but the Japs' did. Lex took 7 torps and 3 bombs - went down like a ton of bricks. Yorktown was able to disengage, but she's sitting in Cairns right now demoralizing the Aussies...

If only half of what my B-17 drivers claim is true, I did get some revenge up in Rabaul's harbor, but I'm out of the carrier war for at least a month...

U2 -> The Yamato (5/23/2002 1:04:20 AM)

Hi!

This will sound strange but noticing the battleship Yamato & Co come down on a transport TF with a 4 DD escort almost made me think fatalistic thoughts. She is BIG and MASSIVE and almost scared my poor, neutral, peace loving swedish soul:) Yamato and Musashi really scares me as the Allied player.
Any Yamato/Musashi encounters you are willing to share?
Dan

How many fighter groups did you have at that base/TF? And what setting do you have? (CAP LEVEL 10-90%)

I had 3CV's, and as Yorktown had been sunk in a re-make of Coral Sea, and having been short two air groups on Saratoga, I loaded an extra F4 group. My CAP was set at 70% with almost no fatigue.

Yup. Yamato was a part of that last 4BB group that smashed up my SC TF. Those 18in shells can disable a CA with one good salvo.

Joel Billings -> (5/23/2002 4:48:10 AM)

Be careful that adding air units to a carry doesn't overload it. If it exceeds the capacity by 10% the air units will not fly combat missions. Maybe the Saratoga was overloaded and not flying any CAP.

mogami -> Sinking those Jap CV (5/23/2002 2:31:51 PM)

Hi, so far the single most impressive battle has been Lex and Yorktown sinking all 3 IJN carriers on 10 May 42 without being badly hurt in return (damaged them on the 10th and sank em on the 11th)

Joel,

Thank you for the reminder. :) Though in this particular case, Saratoga had no SBD's due to a prior engagement, so I replaced them with Yorktown's F4's. I had huge CAP. :) I utterly wiped out a 69 a/c strike with this setup. :D

Rex Bellator -> Yamato stories (5/23/2002 7:59:55 PM)

In the 4 Weeks Of Hell scenaio I had congratulated myself on thrashing the IJN out of Guadalcanal after some tough battles.

I put together a big transport fleet stuffed with goodies for the desperate Marines and sent it to Lunga safe in the knowledge that the IJN were impotent.

On the second night of it's unloading, who should sail down the slot but the Yamato itself. My brave PT boat squadron of 12 boats actually attempted to torpedo the thing! The contrast between the tiny PT guys and the biggest battleship in the world made great viewing. Unfortunately for them they were slaughtered (no 18" hits required!) but I'd have loved to have seen one of them hit it woth a torp.

The Yamato then went on to sink 3 CL/CLAA's covering the unloading TF with her big guns, and 3 APs, before retiring with barely a mark on her. Great fun.

von Murrin -> (5/25/2002 8:23:34 AM)

We have more proud new owners methinks.

BUMP

Will_L -> (5/25/2002 7:01:58 PM)

Sent out a task force of six SC's to hunt down a sub near Noumea. I-121 and I-129 proceeded to sink five of the six and they failed to detect and fire back. Of course the one SC that returned had the TF commander on it so at least I had the pleasure of putting him before a Naval board of inquiry and court marshalling his A$$ :)
They did have a two week shakedown cruise too...

mogami -> Caught with Pants down (5/25/2002 11:44:51 PM)

Hello everybody, Well I know the worst for me just occured.
PBEM game with SInjen, Scen 17 I am Allies. On May 22 42 Carrier TF under Kinkaid operating Southeast of Woodlark Island is conducting unrep when caught by Jap Carriers. Kinkaid got off a strike and it is reported all 3 Jap birdfarms were hit. But Yorktown swallowed 8 torpedos and sank. Lexingtons condition remains classified. Good job Sinjen I had no idea you were anywhere near. (Hint for other commanders:when you do not have postive contact with enemy carriers assume they are near by) Kinkaid did not have many ops for the battle since he had just taken on fuel using up all the ops, I was suprised he actually launched planes.

Wahay! Mogami has broken his duck (scored to you US types):D . When in an earlier,post he said he hadn't lost a carrier, I was very demoralised :( , and wondering what I was doing wrong. Now I know we can all have these little reef building experiences, my confidence is back!:cool:

mogami -> When hunting bears..... (5/26/2002 1:37:24 AM)

Hii, Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes he gets you. Several weeks of steaming and a contact report of the enemy CV's up near Lunga the day before. I headed south for 2 days and thought I was well clear of him. But I had no further sightings and this alone should have set off the alarm (It did in fact and I ignored them and maintained course and speed since fuel was a concern) He must have been going full steam to over take me (I joined my oilers and decided the weather thunderstorms might hide me while I replenished). Actually I had visions of catching him napping up north waiting for a US attempt at transports there. hahaha. I don't expect this will be the last time I lose a birdfarm too many good players out there. The good news was the next day there were no Japanese carrier planes over my TF. Along with Yorktown and Lex 3 CA were hit and limping back to Numea. I have my fingers crossed for the next 4-5 days and I seem to have lost a TF of DDs somewhere. (All the DD escorts have vanished)

von Murrin -> (5/26/2002 2:14:02 AM)

Maybe you should've stuck with the IJN. Similar reputation for invincibility being the greatest weapon and all that... ;) :D

Maybe when I've figured out most of the more subtle aspects of this game, we can have a go at PBEM, seing as our CV records and operational tactics are rather similar. :)

U2 -> (5/26/2002 2:27:00 AM)

Hi!

Mogami should not have posted his failure thread. Now many young and hungry Skywalker wannabies will try to defeat the once undefetable Empire of Mogami.
I myself is playing against him but so far I have to put a TOP SECRET on all documents but I promise you that once something vital happens I will post a U2 vs Mogami AAR. Perhaps Mogami would like to start this:confused:

Dan

As one who is waiting for his game to arrive, your reports are making me salivate!

IKerensky -> (5/26/2002 5:06:38 AM)

My Best/worst/nope Best/ ouch definitely worst experience come from my first solomon sea battle.

I did manage to put my bold 2 CV task force right behind the Japanese TF being NE of Gili gili . Happy to have them surprised in range of PM I was full of expectation when I pushed the turn button then ...

My CV fleet strike twice .. against Japanese Ap fleet , neglecting the CV lying in the sun a few miles away... ARGGG they sink many but you guess what : before they can return IJN strike come by and obliterate one of my CV :(

Funny thing was that my strike forces where turned back and send to land to PM. From there they initiate a strike against the Japanese TF and sink 1 or 2 and damage a 3rd. Victory and vengeance is mine. Especially as I show that my burning CV was still flotable and can be saved ...

Except for the **** Japanese Sub that just pass bye and sink him with 2 torpedoes ... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Definitely my better/worst/better/worst happening.

madflava13 -> (5/26/2002 5:42:30 AM)

I just had a "different" best...
Argonaut has arrived in my game V. the AI... I've had her busy mining near Truk - I hadn't seen a Jap CV in sometime, and low and behold I get the message that the Akagi has hit a mine, along with the Myoko and the Tenryu. That TF commander must've been pissed. The same field also claimed SS I-1 and an AP carrying an artillery reg. I know this cause they had to be rescued... God I love mines....

Ouch - that had to hurt! If were the Japanese player and that happened, I would commit seppuku and resign immediately! :o

The most one sided sea battle I've seen yet in my campaign game is two of my IJN Minelayers getting caught by the BB North Carolina and escorts. A daylight battle at 14000 yds, they didn't stand a chance! :eek:

HARD_SARGE -> Best TF mission, or the luckyest (5/27/2002 4:53:15 PM)

Hi Guys
been following the forum and waiting for the game, got it last monday and been going to town ever since (had to make a new name, as I lost the old one ?)

best mission for me, 11-4-42 (the may 1st to Dec 31 43 battle)

I the Allied and got lots of TF's comeing into Lunga and other areas, too many for my fighters to protect them all, and trying to slip some raiders up the slot, so need something to distrack the IJN

I order the CL St. Louis with 2 other CL's and 4 DD to make a fast run to Shortland, and try to bombard it while the IJN is sleeping, and to beat feet afterward, RADM W. Smith walks from the room with out even a by your leave sir, but I guess I can understand how he feels

the ships raise ancor and depart, as the sun comes up, the TF is still short of it's goal, but a massive Storm front has started to move across the map, most bases are shut down and the few that do get planes into the air, can not find any targets

as the TF reaches the mouth of the Harbor, a MSW tried to block it's path, teach it not to be out doing it's job, minus 1 MSW

then 3 AP float into veiw 15000 yards away, by the time the ships have past, 3 AP are on there way to the bottom, along with 1059 troops and 10 guns

surely by this time, somebody has got to of heard all the noise and is comeing to find out what is going on

Yeap, another MSW comes around the pier, and joins his brothers

stream out of the smoke and 7 more AP are lined up on the shore, all different sizes, at least by the time the TF passes, they are all the same size and color, Blacken and wet, very wet

and now the target is in sight, the Airfield of Shortland, as the TF turns back into the wind and heads out of the harbor, 8 Zeros are destroyed, with another 7 damaged, 47 men are killed, and a CL and DD take a hit each (funny place to hide ships ?, must of been inside the hangers)

the Air base takes 23 hits, the Runway 51, and the field supply dump is smokeing as is the Ports (3 and 1 ?)

not a bad Mission, 12 ships sunk, 2 slightly damaged, 8 planes, and 1106 men dead, and while the field is not knocked out, it is hurting

the only damaged to the Allies, the bosenmate swollowed his whisle when the guns first started to fire

sometimes, you just got to be lucky

HARD_Sarge
