How does the GE/A.I handle ASM/SSM attacks as it pertains to SAM's? Using this example:

Platform A: Center of formation; SAM's with a 50nm range
Platform B: 25nm from Platform A; SAM's with 35nm range
Platform C: 40nm from Platform A, 15nm from Platform B; SAM's with 25nm range
(assume ships are positioned in a straight line from Platform A to C)

A missile is inbound and is headed for C (assume it's origin is Point D which is 100nm from C on the same bearing)

Which ship will launch to intercept?

The ships are at A, B, C. The respective SAM ranges are a, b, c. Each tick represents 5 nm.

It seems to me (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that ship C will engage first. Later ship B will engage, but only against unengaged missiles. Then ship A will engage, but only against unengaged missiles. After that, all ships will keep engaging whenever their launchers are ready and if they have unengaged targets.

Of course, this assumes that the incoming missiles are automatically detected, and that there are no radar horizon effects such as sea skimmers may cause. Radar horizons are approximately 50 nm ship - low and 25 nm ship - VL.

Tony answered Rabbit's same question on HarpGamer, but for the benefit of the folks here:

The code (as it stands right now) considers the group's platforms sequentially, starting with the first ship that was added to the group (when it was built by the scenario's author) through to the last. The first ship within range fires enough SAMs to saturate the target, if it can, and then on to the next ship in line.

Ideally, then, in an AAW scenario, the author would add his short range SAM shooters first, followed by his long range shooters.

As Tony stated on HG, a more intelligent replacement for this particular piece of code was started some time ago, but it hasn't been incorporated yet. It would take into account both own group and neighboring groups, and tries to decide whether to help defend those neighboring groups.
