Feinder -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/28/2009 4:22:15 PM)

I've enjoyed quite a few games in my time between WitP turns.

Right now, I'm playing "Oblivion".  I've enjoyed the other Bethesda titles (Elder Scrolls and Morrowind), and frankly, they just get better and better.  WitP and downtime on Obvlivion (not much of that, I'll commend Bilbow for getting turns out (too) quickly!).

I've also played:
UV (pre WitP)
Pacific Fighters.
Midevil Total War (had Rome, loaned it out, and never got it back).
Civ 3.
Age of Empires.
Temple of Elemental Evil.
Neverwinter Nights.
WW2O.
Asheron's Call (original).
EQ (original).

And a few scale models (mostly WW2 planes and ships).

(and yes, a former SFB captain here as well!)

Anyone here try X3:TC (X3: Terran Conflict)? It's essentially a sandbox space flight sim with a massive universe and a semi-tacked on plot. It's been my most recent addiction while I wait for AE.

A traditional cardboard counter game.

Federation and Empire.

I wish they would make this into a computer game. I used to play on the Startfleet Battles tournament circuit in the late 80s and early 90s.

Federation and Empire was great. [&o] I still have it in abox in my attic

And your wish shall be answered.

Ok, not a as a standalone computer game but online playable version on the SFBOL servers. It's a sanctioned fan product so work is slow, but I've seen progress.

John 3rd -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/28/2009 4:39:53 PM)

I should say that my first love and still favorite game system in the world is AD&D Second Edition--Skills and Powers.  It is not what I describe as 'dumbed down' D&D.  Love Role Playing games!  My friends and I created a game loosely based on Twilight 2000 where Aliens invade Earth and--unlike Independence Day--humanity loses.  Phoenix is a blast!  Try to  imagine fighting Aliens with high tech weapons when you start with an M-16!

Anyway...since children RPGs have become a thing of the past.  Perhaps once my boys get older I can play again...

Charbroiled -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/28/2009 4:47:24 PM)

Fallout 3, Oblivion, Close Combat:Normandy

Cool. It would make a great turned based PBEM game.

Crimguy -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/28/2009 5:15:55 PM)

I play a lot of different games, just rarely get time to put more than a couple hours in each week lately (children are the scourge of the planet).

Lately I've been putting time into:
AGEod's American Civil War (latest tweaks to AI have made it very tough for me)
GG War Between the States (CTD's on my computer tho).
Unreal Tournament 3
CM:SF

I've put a hold on WitP until AE comes out. It's killing me because I finally hit the Japs hard near PM, and I think I splashed 2 of their carriers (hasn't shown on the ships sunk page yet and I couldn't loiter because there was another CV TF nearby).

EWGuttag -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/28/2009 5:22:10 PM)

Matrix's Guns of August (I'm a WWI buff).  Also, occasionally, Grisby's World at World: A World Divided.  After that, it's boardgames, both Eurogames like Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, Railroad Tycoon the Boardgame, etc., and wargames, primarily CDGs such as Paths of Glory, Pursuit of Glory, etc., plus opertional games such as Clash of Giants I and II, and occasionally Memoir '44.

anarchyintheuk -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/28/2009 6:48:20 PM)

Recently ran through Baldur's Gate again, playing GoA and EiA atm.

John, I'm still a die hard First Edition AD&D fan. I never moved onto 2nd Edition, or the newer versions. I've found a few places on the internet with fantastic resources for 1st E fans. I haven't played actively in forever, but I have still enjoyed reading lots of material from back in the day. [8D]

I personally find the entire concept of a "favourite game besides WitP" completely ludicrous... There is NO other game than WitP...[:D]

The guy with a tattoo of Dr. Phil on the back of his head makes the most sensible post - go figure!

John Lansford -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/28/2009 8:25:52 PM)

I play Fallout 3 and MechWarriors when I want to just go out and blow things up in real time, and City of Heroes when I just want to do some random adventuring.  I also run an online AD&D v3.5 game on Saturday nights with my wife and some of her friends.  I've got all the Steel Panthers versions and play them occasionally, also the Talonsoft Civil War series, and play Starfleet Battles occasionally too.  I like playing the Klingon D7 and its variants; I've managed to gain enough prestige once or twice to end up commanding a B10 and once, a B11!

crsutton -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/28/2009 9:44:41 PM)

Forgot to mention that I still play "Advanced Squad Leader". Lots of boardgames in my past but this is the only one I still have.

You know I just want to say that, I curse you guys for answering my question so quickly and so voluminously. I curse you for making me aware of just HOW MANY fascinating-sounding games there are out there, at a time in my life when I am already spending too much time on games instead of work, even with the small number I already own!!

OMG, somebody _please_ get this crack pipe away from me!!! [X(]

Barb -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/28/2009 11:53:19 PM)

I have few games to play (SPWAW and HOI2 among them), but they really cannot compete with WITP....

kfmiller41 -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/29/2009 12:02:34 AM)

Fallout 3, Oblivion, Gary Grigby's War between the States and World of Warcraft (on and off, have to watch that addiction carefully[:D]) but only until AE comes out, then i am doomed[:-]

Can't believe nobody has mentioned "Red Orchestra" It is the only shooter out for WWII fanboys. Not a Quakefest but calls for serious group tactics on the Eastern front. You can also drive a tank with up to three crew members, man a MG42 and have to change out the barrel before you burn it up, or just use the bayonet, and there are two amazing mods out that take it to North Africa and the Western front. All the balistics are real. Trouble is, the maker Tripwire never got the promotion out and most shooterboys play the horrible "Call of Doodie". Actually has been a boon for Red Orchestra. A small but serious adult community with no cheaters and hackers. PC only-not made for the console which has limited the number of kiddies and morons playing. Check it out. They frequently offer it for ten bucks on steam.

What server do you play Red Orchestra on? 99% of the servers are automatic spam fests on Danzig or that one tank battle map Arasop or something (can't remember exact name). And all of those range from laggy to very laggy, making it no fun to play.

IL2 is almost ten years old and is still the king of flight sims. Where else can you fly an IAR 80?

Gotta ask, does flying the IAR 80 feel like flying a Corsair in 1941 to you too? They feel very similar, but I love them both.

I actually liked HOI2 , at least as far as the ground combat goes, and to some extent the research/industry portion of the game. Fun to have the whole world to muck around with. I think the air war portion sucks, and naval is disfunctional imo.

Nikademus -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/29/2009 2:58:55 AM)

all this gaming talk made me realize how narrow minded i was being by only thinking "wargames"

Non wargames i've been able to enjoy off an on include:

Bioshock
Fallout 3
F.E.A.R. 2
Fallout 1 and 2
NeverWinterNights

Ah......so many games, so little time. I'd love to get a chance to fire up Combat Mission of European Air War. Must win Lotto...then can waste rest of life expectancy on what matters!!!!

Mike Wood -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/29/2009 6:12:33 AM)

Besides WIP and Carrier Force, the game I am currently programming for Matrix Games, I play SPWaW and NWN2.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: ?? (or maybe that is not an acronym?)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. stands for "Scavenger, Trespasser, Adventurer, Loner, Killer, Explorer, Robber".

The game "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl" is a non-linear FPS (first-person-shooter) with RPG (role playing game) elements. You assume the identity of an amnesiac "Stalker", an illegal explorer/artifact scavenger in "The Zone", an alternate reality version of the Chernobyl Power Plant and the surrounding area, which is contaminated with radiation and caused strange otherworldly changes in local fauna, flora and the laws of physics. You try to find out more about your past by pursuing another Stalker who knows more about you into the Zone.
I am not a big fan of shooter games, but it is one of the few such games I have really enjoyed - thrilling story, really spooky atmosphere, great freedom of action. IMO even better than Far Cry (the first).

HMAS Sydney -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/29/2009 10:20:23 AM)

I was very disappointed with STALKER.  It was nothing as they had promised.  It was linear as hell.

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Favorite Game Besides WiTP?? (4/29/2009 10:27:45 AM)

Mmh, don't know what the publisher has promised, I discovered the game well after its release. But compared to other fps games I have seen, it is less scripted and does not force you to slavishly follow a given path, like e.g. in MoH, BiA or CoD. But this is getting OT...

They promised a large world you could just walk across, other stalkers competing with your to find the artifacts.... in fact the entire game was supposed to be about finding better and better artifacts...... animals tracking you across the entire game....... instead it ended up being pretty linear with the artifacts playing a very small part.
