Quick question regarding conversions.
If one sets up a conversion in the editor to give the play the opportunity to covert say a Battleship to a carry can :-
You specify the time the conversion would take?
Does it impact construction [if Japan]
When it rejoins the game as a carrier will it have an air group assigned if so how can you set it?

You can do this in the current version of WITP... and assign a CV airgroup to arrive at the same time. I'm actually thinking about doing a mod where the Japanese make a few prototypes with no armour, turrets etc and then over a succession of upgrade months get the possibility to become CA's/CLAA's/BB's/CV's. This would not affect the whole shipbuild roster, just a few last minute design and production changes and would give the player the chance to overcome some early war losses... Obviously non-historical but not given a chance to design ships except in the editor, it was something I'm interested in doing.

The problem, of course, is that you can't assign a CAG directly to the ship, and if the player chooses not to convert to a CV, he has some planes he shouldn't have.

indeed, house rules in a head to head I guess, no real drama.. just wondering.

does the AI convert ships in Stock AE? like the CS - CVL convertions? or the Ise?

The AE AI only upgrades and only obeys whatever the scenario designer has put in the scenario. Upgrades, for AI and human players, can change class type and can have accompanying changes in aircraft type and complement.

Specifically, and if set up in editor, a CS can upgrade to a CVL and the embarked floatplane airgroups can upgrade to/be replaced by carrier type aircraft.

Interesting, so now we have a reason to protect and train the floatplanes instead of replacing them with CV capable aircraft. How are these floatplanes trained to start? I assume their naval attack training will need some work in order to be effective after conversion to Kates etc.

You can do whatever you want with them. Remember that the floatplanes are removed from the game and replaced by whatever you define them as in the editor. If you want three floatplane flights to convert to a fighter, dive bomber and torpedo bomber carrier squadron, then you simply make them and link them together.

I think it can be tweaked for example the squadron can came with 0 planes and player will have to fill them from the pool. Also with bad pilots forcing the user have to replace them from existing pilot pool.

Don says it quite clearly and concisely. But the play implications don’t work quite the way you may wish them to.

Switching from an AV, with float planes, to a CV(something) with an air group, requires a year in the conversion yard, for the ship, and a very detailed understanding of the ‘convert’ v ‘upgrade’ process. The process of defining a virtual, ‘what if’ air group, that depends on a virtual ‘what if’ ship conversion is even more complex.

Suffice to say, it can be done, but the detailed answer will not be described till after the game releases.

The AI may upgrade, but does not ‘convert’. Period.
