dodger bullet -> Airsupport a little weak? (5/7/2009 3:34:18 PM)

is there a way to tweak it so that the air support makes more than just one strafing-pass?

or maybe have two-three planes instead of just one.

cuz right now flyboys seems a little careless, regardless if we already see a target in the vicinity of the smoke signal -- if he misses that said target, tough luck for us in the ground cuz he ain't coming back.

it'd be nice for him to make another pass had he miss the 'already seen' target, because he'll assume it's that target we want dismantled. if the smoke signal is dropped in an area where no enemies are in yer LOS -- then he'll just make 2 passes and fly out thereafter.

There have been mods for double and triple planes.  It's a matter of modding a weapon type that simulates more death and destruction and assigning that to the appropriate aircraft.  Those mods have also added plane graphics.  Basically duplicates  of the same graphic spread into a formation of sorts.  So that's one way to make them more lethal.  There isn't really a way afaik to get more than one support mission per battle although I've seen it in mods before.  IIRC that was hex edited in the exe.  I don't recall which mod.

bear in mind that you're talking about air support for a company sized element too

And the German player needs to have fun too ;)

Yeah should've mentioned the play balance aspect instead of strictly answering your question.  Play balance is why we have things set up as they are. [;)]

And bear in mind that the name of the game is Close Combat, not Close Air Support or Bomber Command. [8|] The one, random aircraft mission has always represented that desperate roll of the dice to see if the CC Gods might take out that schwerepunct so bedeviling your brilliant battle plan.

Sometimes you get a good strike, sometimes it is a flash in the pan and sometimes you get blue on blue, heartache on heartache. Anything you wish for as a force multiplier is also given to the other side, AI or human. [:-] And the AI's Air Support genie can border on genius. [&o]

Air support is fine as is. Just dont depend on it delivering a happy, 'Saving Private Ryan' ending (tho occasionally it can).
Pay attention to the CAS check-in mssg and avoid targeting mismatches (eg. P51 vs MkIV)

My beef is w/ the weak mortar barrages. The first salvo has a chance at doing a bit of damage if it catches the enemy inf moving, but once they go to ground its pretty rare to cause additional casualties.
I tend to use mortar barrages mostly in an anti-anti-tank (AAT?) role targeting enemy guns I couldnt otherwise attack. As a final resort, mortar barrages can serve as area suppression weapons to slow/halt enemy troop movement thru an area. Eg. interdicting enemy movement towards an undefended VL in the closing minutes of battle.

Nor is it CCM: Joint Terminal Air Controller :}

Which makes perfect sense for a Head to Head game between humans.

Not so much when playing the AI and looking for a bit of historical accuracy for such things as artillery, NGFS and Air Support.

So far CC LD is the best of the lot in my opinion for both fun and accuracy.

But just once I'd like to call in some NGFS and watch the Bosch just get blown to smithereens. [;)]

Yeah that's pretty satisfying when it happens.  It adds to the satisfaction when it doesn't happen all the time.  To your point though we'll keep an eye on it to be sure it's not completely ineffective.  Thanks for the feedback.
