cdnice -> New User and questions (5/8/2009 4:50:34 PM)

Hey there,

I am a new user and having been reading the boards for a few weeks to get a feel for them and try to find the answers to the questions I have before exposing myself by actually asking what are sure to be noob questions! The board is great, I have probably found 95% of the answers I was looking for and learned so much more than what I was looking for.

What, if anything does the colouring of the unit icon, airbase icon and port icon mean? I am playing the Allies in Burma as suggested in the big campaign and I noticed that some bases they are all yellow, some they are all grey and some they are mixed. I have searched the forum here for this and I have read through the sections of the game manual but have not been able to find the answer to this one.

Is there anywhere to find out what units arrived last round if you missed the message ingame?

One of my carriers was supposed to upgrade on 03/42 but was at sea kicking some ass, I docked it for a week or so but the upgrade did not happen. Will it upgrade next time it docks for a set period? What is the period it needs to be docked before the upgrade happens.

Thanks.

D

First, welcome aboard, cdnice!  [:)]

The colors are typically fainter for weak strength ground, air, or ship garrisons at the base, and darker/deeper for stronger numbers of men, planes, or ships present.  Different colors on the individual LCU icons represent different nationalities, Chinese, US, Brit, Indian, etc.

I don't know of any way in the game to repeat the arrival messages.  You can check the typical arrival bases, SF, Sydney, etc, to see if anyone new is there, or use one of the player created tools, like WitP Decoder or the newer WitP Tracker.  These are seperate applications that run and keep track of many useful details about the game.

Your carrier, and any other ships that are due to upgrade, need to be disbanded into a port where there is also a Ship Repair Yard.  Then, if their damage levels are not too high, they will upgrade and take a few system damage points to represent the upgrade work being completed over time.

If you haven't gone there yet, I highly recommend the "List of Must Read Threads" thread that is pinned in the main WitP forum.  Tons of good info in there!

Enjoy! [8D]

You can check the Operations Message for what arrived.  It will give you what arrived with the last run, but nothing before.  I usually check the reinforcemt lists and find out what is coming and make a note of where it's located.

No problem, I have been playing almost daily for 4 years and still feel somewhat noobish at times. Do what many do and just blame the Manual if you need an excuse.

Mostly I'd say the same as USS ...

Should be disbanded NOT just docked in a port with Repair yard, and preferably a Naval HQ.

On the main screen their is a button that says OP at the top. It shows operations for the previous day. If you scroll down to the bottom on that screen is shows what vessels, airgroups, units, arrived where.

And yes for the ship repair you have to DISBAND the ship at a port with a repair yard. For allies Colombo, Diamond Harbor, Melbourne, Sydney, Aukland, Pearl Harbor, and the four U.S. mainland bases. There may be a few others. For the Japanese I don't know.

And the system damage on the ship has to fall below maybe 4 or 3 before it will refit. The OPs screen also tells which ships have started refit at what base, but the messages on the OPs screen change for each day. So a message that say 'CV Yorktown arrives at San Francisco' will only show up on the day that happens.

Also, if you disband a ship in a port of any size, say over size 5 for the port, the ship will slowly repair. The higher the port size the faster the ship repairs. I generally send AKs, APs, TKs, etc...that have alot of damage to Vancouver and just let them sit there until they repair. Takes months.

Large warships like BBs, even when at a base like S.F. take a long time to repair if they have alot of damage. Months. Spread out the ships that need alot of repair among your U.S. bases, with the most needed ships disbanded at S.F.

And, having ARs (ship repair ships) at a base with a repair yard speeds repair. I think the optimal number of ARs at a base is 4. So I have 4 ARs at Pearl Harbor, S.F., Colombo, Melbourne, etc...you have to convert AKs to ARs at S.F. I believe.

Thanks, appreciate the advice.

CDNice,

Welcome aboard the Good Ship WitP!  Where fun, adventure (and addiction) lurk at every turn.  And most importantly, the folks here are glad to help newcomers out.  This game has more interesting nuances than you can imagine (and I've only done 114 turns or so in the Guadalcanal campaign which is a good one to start with).
