MKSheppard -> Scenario Idea for MODers: What if the Yamoto and Mushashi had never been built? (5/24/2002 1:56:05 AM)

quote:

One of the interesting points in the biography of Yamamoto
(The Reluctant Admiral) is that he held the opinion that
the Washington Treaty Limitations were beneficial for
Japan since they could never hope to outbuild the US
and/or Britain. Fortunately he was overuled and the Japanese
spent vast sums of money on Yamato and Musashi instead of
building escorts.

The Main thread is here:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&threadm=3ce0fcf0.10409281%40nntphost.dur.ac.uk&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fq%3DWorld%2BPeace%2B%252BBattleship%2Bgroup:sci.military.naval%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26safe%3Doff%26selm%3D3ce0fcf0.10409281%2540nntphost.dur.ac.uk%26rnum%3D1

Basically, what if some enterprising sleuth were to make a
Long Campaign Mod with the editor in which Yamoto and
Mushashi were never built, and the Japanese instead get
30%+ more escort ships like destroyers, etc along with
30%+ more transports?

OOO I'm off to see how hard that would be.....

I think that taking away the Yamato class ships would make the game less fun because those big guns are so :cool: - but that's certainly just my personal opinion.

brisd -> no Yamato?! (5/24/2002 5:08:48 AM)

Actually in hindsight that class should never have been built but most admirals are trying to refight the last war, not the future one.

I get the Yamato into Truk this week in my campaign and look forward to giving my troops at Port Moresby some 18" gun support. :D

Erik Rutins -> Interesting! (5/24/2002 6:22:52 AM)

Sounds like a pretty cool modified scenario idea to me.

kverdon -> Neat Idea. (5/24/2002 8:21:15 AM)

It would be an interresting idea for a alternative scenario. I used to wonder WHY? the IJN never sent the Yamato/Musashi down the slot and just sent their aging BC's. Certainly thier 18" guns would have been very effective against Henderson and they would have been a much better (actually superior) match against any of the NC or SD class BB's they would likey meet from the USN. They would not have had the qualatative advantage that the NC's and SC's had againt the Kongo's but it would have been a nice edge!

The most obvious answer that came to mind was that their relatively slow speed (~27knots) was not sufficient for them to get down from Rabaul during the night and then out of range of US LBA before morning. I later read an analysis that pointed out that this was only part of the picture and that the more impelling reason for their lack of use was that, at battle speed, they were tremendous fuel Hogs and that a full speed run from Rabaul to the canal with the Yamato's would have burned up a good percentage of the IJN's fuel supply. This and the enormous amount of resourses tied up in them meant that they only could be used for limitted DECISIVE engagements. Classic case of building a weapon that was too expensive to use.

How about they do the Shinano thing early and get 2 heavily armored large CV's instead :eek: :eek: :eek:

(Fuel hogs though they be...)

You know, I think I'm going to try that with scen 17. Say for instance that they begin to get converted a month or two after war is declared. Then they can show up in mid '43 to help bolster a hard-pressed IJN CV fleet. :)
