VANILLA GORILLA -> Which is the all around best game for me? (5/11/2009 5:34:54 AM)

I'm a big fan of games like Dai Senryaku and such. I was wandering which of these two games better handles Naval and Air combat. T.O.A.W. III or Advanced Tactics. I'm also picky in that I don't want a dedicated game for either. The game I'm looking for will need ground war as its main component. I'm not an ultra realistic gamer, so it doesn't matter if one or both are abstract in their presentation of the subject. I'm just looking for something fun, and something with some great scenarios on the subject. I have TOAW III, but can't seem to find a default naval game or find a user made scenario handling something like this. So if you think TOAW is the better, would you point me to some great Naval/Air campaigns. Please note, I haven't had time to look at all the default so if I've overlooked one, which is it.

All in all, I like a game that lets me pick my strategy. Today you may be conquered with ground forces, but tomorrow-on the same map, I may decide to sneak a few landing crafts with air cover from my carrier is the type of game play I like.

Advanced Tactics hands down.I would say the detail of naval and air combat in advanced tactics is almost as detailed as ground combat.Infact one of training scenarios IS a naval battle.And unlike in TAOW III, you need to have control over the airspace to win.In Advanced Tactics, you forget naval or air power then you are limiting yourself and giving your opponent the edge and you will pay dearly for it.(Especially in Random Battles)

I'm an AT player myself and I haven't played TOAW. Of course, it sounds to me like AT is right for you.

Beware that many people find AT too different. It's got a bit of a learning curve with the supply and command layer and you might be put off by that.

So the disclaimer from me is YMMV, not everyone has taken to the game.

AT is a fun game on it's own and handles air combat better than ToAW. Flipside is, that it offers only a handful AI supported WW2 scenarios, including user created ones, while TOAW got tons of those.

For a more versatile game I would rather recommend Hoi2.

In Advanced Tactics, you can do just that.
