antarctic -> Battle Generator Quirk?? (5/24/2002 7:17:24 PM)

Hi

I've just played a random generated SP game, Soviets vs. Germans July 1944, on a medium map.

For some reason, all the German units were all artillery pieces (except the HQ)
They had around 6 mortars, and 2 36mm flaks, and that's all!! Does anyone know what happened, or does that just happen once in a while?

Thanks

Antarctic

PS. Obviously, I kicked the computer.... but losing one of my precious T34/85's in the process... To MORTAR fire!! Aaargh!

Well, I worked extensively on the oob's early in WAW's developement, and unless the teams after me got info we asked for, but never got, here's the reason the generater sucks!!

We were never told which slots in the formations, the computer used!! Mike Wood ended up doing all that, I guess, which is really stupid, because right now, Bulgaria will give you nothing, or at best a few infantry platoons with the generator!! I don't know what the big secret was, but since we didn't know what the hell was going on in that department, we're lucky the AI picks anything!!

I'm talking about using the battle generator to pick BOTH sides here, it seems in regular campaign battles, to do an okay job, but I think Bulgaria is still messed up there too!!

Sorry, we did the best we could w/o all the facts!! This is why I go and rebuy all the AI forces in my campaign games, and redo the maps and such, AI pick just don't cut it.....

I've experienced something similar. I must've encountered a battalion from the Japanese "1st Light Mortar Division" or something like that.

Try switching RARITY off. When the computer is unable to buy what it wants, it will sometimes.... do funny things.

I always pick for my AI opponent.

Try picking large groups as well.

Instead of buying individual platoons or companies buy companies and batallions.
Instead of buying individual armored units buy a armored batallion(expensive but I just jack upt he points and dont use them all).
When I buy lots of little things for the AI it does incredibly odd things. Also maybe its just in my head but when I buy for the AI in large groups the AI seems to attack and defend in cohesion much much better. Odd

I've noticed the same thing, with the larger formations, the AI actually does a half decent job of trying to kick my arse!! In my Allied Bulgarian campaign I've got going on right now, the German are busting through my lines everywhere, my armor is getting decimated, and I had to call in my third company of armo to stem the tide!! Very invigorating!!:D

thanks guys... seems my problem isn't all that unique.....

Ah well... there's no such thing as a perfect game...

This is my understanding of the cause of this problem...or at least when using the AI to buy forces for BOTH sides in PBEM games.

In the preferences there is a control (I forget which) that sets realistic unit availability...it helps stop people buying 100 platoons of Tigers.

Well, the AI has certain hard-coded requirements for purchasing formations...eg, it will purchase for the British 1 company of armour, then one company of infantry, then one company or armour and so on until it runs out of points...now, if it selects an infantry company and it comes up without infantry units it will still by the rest of the component units (mortars, trucks, mg's and the like), but it then tries to purchase another infantry company to achieve the infantry/armour balance that is programmed...again if that company comes up without infantry units, it wll buy the other components and try again...and so on until it runs out of units or runs out of points.

What probably occurred in your case is you set the AI to select forces with the realistic availability preference on...when the computer selected a formation, no units were available, so it just kept trying (without purchasing anything or only certain unit types) until it exited the loop somewhere.

Before I find this feature, the AI had selected foreign legion battalions consisting almost only of trucks, and infantry consisting only of mortars.

The Trick is to turn of the preference...the computer can then buy as much as it wants of any weapon without that type becoming unavailable.

The only weakness is that the AI isn't very imaginative...you inevitably end up with virtually the same formation make-up everytime...for 5000 points in 1944 the british get two medium tank squadrons and two companies of infantry (no OB artillery although one battery of SPA), the germans a mechanised company, a panzer company and a few stugs and recon squads (a couple of batteries of OB artillery); the russians a couple of tank companies, a couple of infantry companies and some SU units and some OB artillery...the games soon lose interest.
