Williamb -> Is it possible to edit maps for deployment ? (5/16/2009 7:41:23 AM)

I asked this question eons ago when Atomic was still making these games.

I know that many dislike the random placement of units. The AI has a tendancy to scatter its troops all over the place and put units in very bad locations (mainly guns) that have poor LOS.

I suggested back then that since the map had deployment zones (one zone for allies, one for axis and one zone where neither could deploy) that it might be possible to edit in "Deployment zones" that are limited to certain units to prevent the scattering.

For example. Infantry could still be deployed anywhere within the normal zone for that side. Tanks would be limited to just selected areas. And another futher set of zones would limit where guns could be placed.

That way an anti tank gun isnt placed in the middle of some woods or tanks or vehicles place in a area that could lead it to be trapped.

Is there a way to eidt the map deployment zones to set up so way to control where units can go in the initial setup ?

No.  It's something that is being considered.  Since you can move your own units around within your deployment zone I'm not sure this matters much for the non-AI controlled units and it seems to me the AI does a much better of placing units in the deployment phase.  There's at least some indictions that it's finding good locations for AT guns and tanks unlike what it used to do in the past.  Not sure if it's wishful thinking on my part but it does seem to be better.  There was no mention of enhancing this during development so that's why I'm not sure if what I'm seeing was circumstance of if it was actually improved.
